    Or above some folks.

Note you're not dropping use of analogies. That's good, 'cause they are meaningful comparisons ;)

    I use an Autel 539b
Has live data and data freeze ability plus multimeter, battery load test and is programmable with free updates and user support online. Excellent instructions in print and Disc.
Online support is a big plus.
    Heavy duty case seems indestructible.

I've got a cheapie pocket sized Launch for pulling codes in the parking lot, cost about $75.

Once their car is in the bay and the meter is running we've got a $12,000 snap-on setup in a roll cart with capability to do just about anything

Haha it actually does have that button right next to the trouble code descriptions. It just links you to snap-on's trouble tree pages, same thing as Alldata or Mitchell

I have a similar Autel AL619. Includes ABS and SRS diagnostic codes. Recently used the live data function to isolate a malfunctioning O2 sensor. Haven't used all the advanced features yet, but nice to know it's there when I need it.

Goes for around $80 and up on eBay.

Not sure if a one-word reply on a new name Internet forum is the equivalent to a slap in the face but OK lol that other guy probably has some analogy for it. OK now think of something funny I’ll check back after work this is mildly entertaining

I bought a hand held scan tool when I bought my Tacoma in 2008, and since you can't update the software, you can only enter vehicles built through 2008.

I recommend buying a OBII Bluetooth transmitter that will link with your iPad, Tablet, or phone, then download a scan tool app that works with that device. It will continue to be updated as long as it exists in the App store, and the total cost of both is <$50. I think I paid about $25 for my transmitter, and ~$7 for the app. I connect it to my iPad. By going with this type of setup you get a display that's much larger than any cheap hand held scanner.

With that in mind, shop Amazon for devices, but before you buy it, go to your phone or tablet's app store and look for apps you like to see if they work with that specific device. Or you can look up the app you like first, then search Amazon for devices that work with that app.

I like apps that work much more like a professional scan tool. Most of these apps have a bunch of BS you don't need to work on your vehicle, so shop smart.
