Many (full-size and heavy-duty) trucks are too big and expensive for my tastes and needs (thus why I have a Tacoma).

That said, I don't mind, since as a proud American and capitalist I understand that the big trucks and growth trend is simply a market reaction to the buying public's tastes.

Trucks aren't too expensive! They make trucks with $60,000 stickers, but you don't have to pay that much unless you just want to. There are lots of options under $35,000, and relative to today's incomes $35,000 isn't that much money.

I bought my 1st new truck in 1985 and paid $10,700 for a bare bones basic regular cab F150. It had the 6 cyl engine, manual, rubber floor mats and seats. The only options were 4X4 and AC. The median family income in 1985 was around $21,000. The median family income for 2020 is around $64,000.

I can't buy that exact truck anymore, but something very similar would sell new for around $33,000 according to KBB. Since the average income has tripled, it would be normal for the price of trucks to triple in the same time. And the 2020 truck would be a MUCH better truck.

Tis true there is a good range of prices. But they are still quite expensive in relation to cars. If you look at the comparison from say thirty years ago and today you'll see that trucks have risen in price faster than autos.
