I would ask if your insurance would cover it and also make sure to take off most of your mtb gear before you get to a hotel (who knows maybe you do).

A combination of reasonable precautions plus good insurance should work. Lots of good ideas re "reasonable precautions" in this post. I have a $2K hunting dog and $6K in shotguns that accompany me on bird hunting trips. All come into the motel room when I'm on the road. I've got a rider on my homeowners policy for the guns, so no worries there -- just 'stuff'. Wish I could insure the dog, but how do you insure emotional attachment?

As someone that also owns an expensive bike, sneak that bitch in the back. I'd never leave in my truck overnight unless I'm sleeping in the bed with it.

Friends bike got stolen. The large cable was cut and the bike was gone. We were standing about 50 feet ways and had out backs to it for less than 30 sec.

When the police came, they said, "your bike has already been parted out". They explained that the people who do this are typically professionals.(this was in a big city). For U-locks, they use scissor jacks, for cables they use bolt cutters, And for link chains, they use the coffee thermos with liquid nitrogen.

Your best bet is to keep the bike hidden.

Lots of great feedback in this post, thanks everybody.

My bike is totally modded up, pretty much every part. Stock from the factory it retails for $5k, after my mods closer to $7k. I decided I'm not going to leave that in the truck overnight at a hotel, no way. I'll just find a bike bag, break it down and bring it in to the hotel. Case closed.

Could even snag a bike box from a shop, worst case. Definitely cheaper than a bike bag.
