Dog transportation in an access cab or double cab?

    Curious if anyone can enlighten me with how well an access cab does with transporting doggos.

    I have a 75lb German Shepherd who takes long 7 hour road trips with me 4-5 times a year up north and he currently has a pretty nice platform in the double cab, but I’ve been wanting a longer bed for some time since I can close the gate when I put my dirt bikes in.

    long story short:

    how can I fit my dog in an access cab and can he ride comfortably back there for 7+ hours? I am 6’2 so my seat isn’t always as far back as it can go, but it is pretty darn close. Should I stick with a double cab?

    A DCLB is always nice if you have more than 1 friend or keep stuff inside the cab.

    Access cab folks put a sheet of ply with some 2x4 feet over the back seats for a flat resting area for pooch.

    My dog weighed about 50 pounds. He did well with the platform I put in my '09 access cab after removing the rear seats. YMMV.

    Dodging tumbleweeds
    I had a double cab tundra(access cab equivalent) and my 75 lbs GSP foster dog did not fit well in the back. He could not turn around. I can’t imagine the Tacoma being much better. Does the third gen Tacoma front seat fold flat? My second gen Tacoma would fold flat and create a table, kinda made my truck seem bigger than it was. Obviously doesn’t work when you have passengers. Having the longer bed in the tundra was great for hauling though. The backseat was fine for full size humans with the double cab, just not great for big dogs.

    I have a 7 year old Aussie lab mix who is about 50 pounds and she rides in the back of my access cab. I took out the jump seats and headrests and built a platform that sits flush with the factory storage thing. I have a foam lined pad that goes on top of the platform and she seems pretty comfortable back there. She can lay down fairly comfortably but I haven’t take her on anymore than a maybe 2 hour drive. She’s pretty good as far as car rides go, I also keep the rear slider window open for her to look out of and get some fresh air. On shorter rides she rides shotgun or in the back with her paws on the center console. Overall I find the access cab to be pretty good for her. But that’s with taking the rear seats out. I don’t think she would be as comfortable if they were still in there.

    No need to remove rear seats in the AC.
    20" x 50" for my 90 lb Lab.

    You need to shrink your dog to 10% of it’s original size and get a booster seat.

    That’s a good look but you lose so much space underneath that platform.

    Offroad stuff, Audio stuff, Cooler full of beer
    Removing the seats and doing the utility panel will give you the most room possible. Easily fit our 90 Lb dog back here.

    I’m about to take out the back seats of my access cab, so I can build a flat platform for my dog to ride on as well. My 06 access cab seats folded down flat for a perfect platform for Cleo to ride on. The 3rd gen has those stupid bucket seats that get in the way!
