Recommendations for portable tire inflator

Next week we will be flying to Dallas to pick up our new TRD Pro so I’m shopping for all the accessories. Can anyone recommend a good portable tire inflator? We live in Cabo and will be driving on sand a lot so it should get a fair amount of use.
Please let me know what other essentials we should consider. I need to shop while we’re in the US because the selection in Mexico isn’t great.

 

If you want fast and portable, then I have been impressed with my Viair. I bought a 300P and just converted it to automatic. Otherwise, I'd say go with the 400P Automatic.


The ARB also has a lot of fans around here.

 

ARB Twin Air - you can mount it in several different locations. Pricey, but worth it IMO.

Based on the fact you'll be doing it frequently, you'll want something with some ass behind it, otherwise you'll spend forever filling up. I've had a dual arb in the past and liked it.

edit: It also depends on your tire size too.

 

I’ve used the dewalt 20v inflator and without any issues. 100 bucks as a bare tool. If you’re already invested in a cordless tool platform Milwaukee, makita, and ryobi (maybe others) also have cordless inflators. Runs on batteries or 12v power from cig lighter

Puma PD1006. Continuous duty compressor with a 1 1/2 gallon tank and doesn't require it to be permanently mounted to 1 vehicle.

 

My friend has the dewalt one. I did all of mine and two of his before that thing finished one of his tires. I have 33s and he has 265/70/17s.

 

The Viair compressors are great. I personally use an 88p (see below) and it hasn't let me down yet. If it ever sh*ts the bed on me, I'll probably upgrade to one of the bigger ones. One of the nice things about the 88p is it will fit in the cubby behind your driver side back seat and won't blow your cig lighter fuse since it connects direct to battery.

For those who are considering this inflator, it inflates each one of my 265 75 R16 tires from 16psi to 34 in about 1 minute. Add a minute between each tire for duty cycle cool down, you can be aired back up in about 10-15 mins. Works well

Definitely more nuts to the portable compressors. I think the dewalts etc are called “inflators” not quite to compressor status. Sounds like something like you’ve got would be better for OP if they’re airing down and up all the time

 

Exactly. Just topping off tires the dewalt is fine, but if somebody is looking to air up and down, a Viair or ARB is hands-down the way to go!

 

OP - I will say, the 88p is probably the best $60 I’ve spent in a long time. Can’t go wrong with any of the suggestions here tho.

I do a lot of surf perch fishing and as a result, I air down often to drive on the beach. I’ve used it probably 50 times so far without issue. Takes about 5 mins to air up all of my tires to 36 psi from 16 psi. I run 265 75 16 duratracs FWIW

 

I personally think viair is the best bang for your buck. I feel like with arb your just paying for the name

I've been using the Viair 400P for the last 18 months. Gets used pretty regularly since we drive out on the beach frequently. No issues with it at all. I often notice I'm finished airing up before other people who had a head start with some other compressor. I've seen it range from $180-250 on Amazon.

 

I got a smitty built one works great for 100 bucks.

You SHOULD see what can be shipped to you while in Cabo just in case you need parts.

My smitty is not mounted though. A guy on here did some really awesome stuff with his. He mounted his in the space between his cab and fender on a LB, and ran air hose to his bumper and had a permanent chuck to air up or down all 4 tires at once. Took him 5 minutes and never had to worry about it getting stolen because you can't see it.

 

Another for Viair 300p. You are probably gonna want some deflators as well.

I was able to build mine for about the cost of a set of deflators. It is easy to make it as one, two, or four wheels.

 

I used to have a compressor in my SUV (before the Tacoma) and then moved it to the Tacoma. I hardly ever used that thing, as I found that if my tire went flat, I was just putting on the spare and fixing/reinflating the tire when I got back home. With the Tacoma, I now air down my tires more frequently and started shopping for a better compressor. That let me to the CO2 tank options and that's what I went with. The CO2 bottle normally stays in my garage if I'm just driving around town and when I pack up the Tacoma for any sort of off road, I throw the tank in the back. WAY faster than even the best tankless compressors and lets me use a airgun to clean things off, pressurize a portable fuel tank to fuel up other vehicles, run a impact wrench, etc.
