Occasionally where I live (florida) there's flooding once in awhile. I have to go through two feet of water or so for short distances..at least once or twice a year...normally flooded roads. is it recommended for me to do a differential breather extension? Or am I okay if I just do it once in awhile?

It’s such a quick and easy swap to extend the breather that I would do it if I were you. It potentially only takes once to get water pulled in through your seals.

Make sure you get a two-way breather when you do it. The stock one on the differential is a vent only.

Good advice, an open breather will keep the diff from pressurizing from stuck OE breather.

    Yes.

And if you are driving in salt water, be sure to pressure wash everything down well very soon afterwards.

I second @state48overland too, Erick was such a pleasure to deal with and even included a hand-written note thanking me for my purchase!

What's the part number for the 2 way breather?, thank you. The dealer wants to sell me the one way...i think the two way is the only way. Does the state 48overland sell the addapter and the two way kit ?

It has been a while since I did it and remember reading a lot of conflicting information on part numbers. I remember landing on these and they worked for me. I confirmed the breather was two-way (basically an open end with cap over it)

I’ve got a post in my build thread and you can see the part numbers I ended up using on the bags:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...p-log-photo-dump-thread.594453/#post-22105721

And that reminds me - I should probably get the build thread updated a little bit.

Thank you, I will look at doing mine very soon here. Tacoma is the main vehicle for launching our fishing boat and some ramps are so shallow i back into the lake until its almost at the bumper...so the breather needs to be raised

Just installed the @state48overland kit, I like their use of the metal filters and multi-barbed union. I routed the filter behind the driver side taillight, zip tying it along the wiring harness. Couldnt bring myself to drill holes in the fuel filler backplate. I also jacked up the rear to make sure there was enough slack when lowering the axel. Definitely use a 6-point socket when removing the old breather, even at just a few months old it took some force to break it loose, followed by the whoosh as it sucked in air. I probably didnt need to do it, but the fact that the other diffs are factory extended, and that I could see driving down a flooded road, the peace of mind was worth the little bit of cost and effort.

I did the exact same thing last week except I just lined it up with the other lines, that also needed to clear extension, to make sure I had enough slack.
