I'm having 2020 trd sport suspension issues

Hey all. I just created this account because I'm stuck in a weird dilemma. I just purchased this suspension setup from a guy who pulled it off his 2020 TRD sport 4x4. I intended on replacing the shocks on my 2011 TRD sport 4x4. I was under the impression that it was a easy swap and would yield me a 1-in lift in the front. When examining the new stuff I am puzzled. The new front shocks are shorter and yet the spring is longer. I haven't touched the backs yet. What am I missing here? This doesn't seem like they'll work as intended. I included pictures to show exactly what I'm referring to. Another interesting point is that the blue shocks are easily compressed by hand where as my yellow shocks are rather difficult to compress. I assumed that the new ones would be a lot stiffer than mine.

When I received the new struts from the guy, the spring was not bolted onto the shock. It didn't come with the top plate at all. So I'm really confused because if these springs are taller and yet the shock body is shorter It seems like they would be really compressed in order to be assembled.I am wondering if someone can confirm that these are the correct parts for a 20-20 Tacoma TRD sport. I'm suspicious that somehow these parts are not what I was told they are. The guy did not do the work himself. So he won't be of that much help. he took it to a shop and these are the parts that they handed back to him after installing new suspension. It's 11:30 at night so I can't call him but I will try to call him tomorrow to get more info.

    Spring compressed = more lift.

But the shock is shorter. The part number on the shock is

The spring would have to be almost fully compressed just to get it to fit on the shock.

That's not really true actually. But I can't get it compressed enough to get it on.

You have a spring compressor or using the jack under the lower control arm?

I still have my take offs from replacing those pieces of garbage (not discounting your purchase but I hated those things)... I'll pull them out and see if I have the same dimensions of spring/shock for ya tho tomorrow.

Is it normal for 3rd gen shocks to be an inch and a half shorter?

Thanks, shoulditbedoingthat. That would be very helpful. I am using a set of poor quality spring compressors. It's all I have access to right now.

yeah that is all I used and I dinged the coils pretty well when compressing them. Also felt like I was holding a bad idea when cranking those things down.

Try to compress the old ones until they are the same length as the new ones.

I don’t think you’re seeing your own problem. These shocks will be the correct size and will give you an extra inch of lift with a little tougher ride, but you can’t judge the shock without a coil pushing on it. The shock is literally designed to expand and compress, but nothing is actually applying force to it because no coil is on it, so it’s just sitting at the present length. You can change the length of both by just pushing hard on either one.

Okay. Thanks for the picture. That's worth a thousand words.

Is see what you mean jmauvis.
I am astounded by the variation between these two setups for such similar trucks.

    Hey @MASON1991

I recently did the same purchase, buying take offs. When I brought the components to a shop to get assembled, they actually could not do it and basically told me theres no way that coil spring will fit on that shock. They told me that there press was starting to bend. Anyway let me know if you found a solution.

    Thanks
