Maybe this is just to be expected on the internet (which is a statement on its own) but to the people simply hating on California, how you're expressing your opinions speaks volumes about you as a person.

Its one thing to say "I had a certain set of circumstances, and my opinions are A, B, and C, so California just isn't for me. I see the appeal, but I would prefer somewhere else." That's totally understandable, and no one can fault you for that.

But when you come in here and just say things to the effect of "its a failed state, CA Sucks, I don't miss anything about it," or "CA sucks, I would never move there in a million years, and anyone who lives there is an idiot." things without any nuance, it really does say more about you than you anything else.

Our company had headquarters in Houston so I traveled there a number of times. Holy hanna was it miserably hot in the summer! And flat! Worse traffic than when I lived in Los Angeles area back in late 80's. I will say the people were very nice and I never met anyone who wasn't.

For a time I traveled to Albuquerque frequently, and for some reason that I still cannot figure out, I really liked it. I'm more of a tropical weather, lush greenery type, so that makes no sense.

Our plan is to move to a rural area in Hawaii in the mid-future. As far as real estate and cost of living, it's comparable to where we are now, so no shock.

thanks, yea, I'm not really not a fan of dichotomizing things and lack of nuance.

I've lived a lot of places (Including texas for about 4 months), and each one has a certain appeal, and certain negatives. I would never completely just hate on things. There's upsides everywhere. If you can't express your opinions with some level of nuance, and you just shit all over the place, that says a lot about you.

I completely agree. I definitely appreciate what Texas has to offer and it's an awesome place in it's own way. However, it definitely doesn't fulfill everyone.

As an almost native Californian, had my first birthday here after my parents drove out of Chicago in 1951 Studebaker convertible... 70 years ago
Lived in San Diego until I went in the army, LA after I got out and the Bay area after the Bell System breakup. Got a lot of opinions about the coast which is why I live in the Eastern Sierras.

The further you get away from the coast, the nicer the people are, I suspect it is from the less stress. Not much in the way of jobs, surely not high paying ones. But not a day goes by that my wife doesn't say "Have I told you today how much I love it here?"

If you can, try to avoid SoCal. We have enough souls wondering around.

Probably not from the past few days as Santa Cruz is closed and close to burning down.

Also this, unfortunately. Norcal is getting hit way harder by fires than Socal is

Big Basin Redwood Park in the Santa Cruz mountains where my wife and I got married a few years ago is burning up, trees that are hundreds if not a thousand years old. Really sad.

Crazy lightning strikes happening all over the area starting the fires, as if 2020 wasn't weird/bad enough.

I would pick Santa Cruz in an instant over Santa Monica, if only because it's further north and the weather (IMO) is better. Way nicer beaches, mountains and forest only a few miles inland. But Santa Cruz is probably one of the most expensive cities in CA to live in, outside of San Francisco

I’m from rural Hawai’i and I wouldn’t recommend anywhere in Hawai’i. It’s a great place to visit but not to live. Left in November to our current location in Oregon. Double your grocery bill is just the first thing that comes to mind.
