Almost bought one when looking at the taco, but the gf wanted the truck, figured either way was a win. Will def look at one as a second vehicle.

I've been very happy with my 1997 4WD SR5 that I bought new...and it has only 109K miles on it. Runs almost like new, and the only thing that doesn't work anymore is the cassette player (remember those things?) and one cupholder is broken. Not bad for almost 24 years here in the Arizona desert heat and sun.

Oops...how does one post a photo here?? Photo is on one of my Flickr pages.

If you want a manual, you’re not looking any newer than 2002. Which is fine, because 3rd gens are the best. Had a ‘99, miss it. Have an ‘03 v8, kind of underwhelmed and hoping to turn it into a 3. 267k miles on it, though.

Honestly, if I could find a manual 3rd gen AND convince my wife, I’d get another one. The convincing part would be the hard part.

    Still thinking about it.
    I read somewhere that in 2010 there was a 4 cyl/5 speed manual 2wd 4Runner. Maybe it wasn’t for U.S. market..

Maybe, but if that's the case, good luck finding it. I know they made a 4 cylinder in 2010, but I'm not aware of a manual transmission being paired with it. I also don't know how I would feel about an i4 powering a 2 ton SUV, but that's not my decision to make.

Now this is a helpful post. I'm partial to the third gen myself but the 4th gen with a v8 would be sweet.

I own a 97 4Runner Auto 4x4 and its fun to drive even over my 2019 OR 4x4, always get compliments and offers. I just picked up a 97 4runner 5 speed 4x4 in rough shape that i will restore.

3rd gen 3.4 engines are tanks, and parts are cheap. i would be disappointed if my 97 4Runners didnt outlast my 2019 OR 4x4

The way I did it to satisfy both is I have a V8 4th gen 4Runner and a 3rd gen Tacoma with a stick.
