My only fear would be having an engine failure or issue and towing to the dealer. “What? Fumoto valve? No engine for you!”

Sounds like a good measure of precaution.

If it's mechanical, it can fail.

Have not heard of the drain lever failing (except on bootleg Wish.com copies) but there have been plenty of instances where the fumoto valve has been sheared off. I have a Fumoto on my Tacoma so I did quite a bit of research before purchasing it.

The only instances that I saw where the Fumoto was sheared or broken off was due to being installed in low profile vehicles like Prius (considered getting one for the wife but decided not to) or sports cars. On the Tacoma it is more than fine.

I had a Fumoto drain plug on my 2001 Dodge Cummins. Absolutely loved it. Just to be extra secure, I drilled a small hole in the drain release and would use safety wire to ensure it didn't accidentally get pushed.

That engine held 11 quarts of oil... while it was draining, I would get my tools ready to remove the oil filter, get the new oil ready to go, etc.. I never felt it took too long to drain out, I would expect it would not take quite as long on our Tacoma's, with only 6.1 quarts ;)

I'll never own another vehicle (that I do my own maintenance on) that doesn't have a Fumoto. I've had one on my 2009 Tacoma since it was new. With the Fumoto (and the catch basin around the oil filter), I can do an oil change without spilling a single drop of oil or even getting it on my hands.

Without Fumoto, how do you remove the OEM plug? Do you unscrew and let if all into your pan - then go searching for it? Do you remove and hold onto it and get oil all over your fingers?

I can drain my Fumoto right into an old oil container with a small opening. It's very precise.

I just got mine, it’s the new version which allows for more oil flow thru the unit . I’m scared to death to use it thou . Quality unit just scared to use it for fear it will open up while I’m driving !

Good idea ! I love the safety wire idea ! Do you think you could take a picture so I can see hole placement and how you wrap the wire ? Possibly ? Please ? Lol

I have had the fumoto valve installed in my old Jeep liberty CRD since I first got it in 2009. It was one of the recommended mods for that engine due to a drain bolt with an alen key head very few threads and an aluminum oil pan. It's very easy to cross thread, to loose the washer and damage the threads in the pan on that engine.
It does make the oil changes simple you only need a filter wrench a drain pan and a funnel. It does drain slower but not like super slow. There is a plastic clip they sell on Amazon if you are worried about it getting turned open by accident. That really is unlikely as you have to pull and rotate the value to open it..
If you get the one with out the hose nipple which I recommend it won't hang down far, it was above the skid plate on my Jeep. I even went of road with it. Wasn't an issue.
I liked having it and will probably get one again for the Tacoma
Here is a link to the clip for the value, it looks like they are giving it with new valves now. They weren't when I bought it last time.

Not close to my first oil change but if I'm doing it myself it will have a fumoto valve. I'm likely to put in the metal filter canister if I don't like dealing with the plastic one. I have the MotiveX filter wrench already.
Having the valve on a previous vehicle I have little worries it would be an issue. I'm not sure what a dealership would say about it. Independent mechanics have seen it on my Jeep. They have either never said anything or commented that they liked it.

I used Fumoto valves for 18 years and I have never had an issue with them even when being offroad.

I have one on every vehicle. I will never go back to a standard drain plug, no more worrying about the copper crush washer sealing every time you tighten or replacing it all the time. No more hot oil on the hand.

Do your research. People are changing things out for different reasons. I still have my plastic oil filter housing. Absolutely zero issues.
