Refresh rate isn’t something you need to be concerned with, to a degree, neither is definition. The nuances are for other purposes like gaming, or certain types of movies where someone in tuned with things will notice minor subtleties that 99% of regular people won’t.

I’d pick a size and a budget and go pick one. 50 or 55? At 12 ft you’re getting plenty of TV either way. I’d go 55 if you’re a more is more kind of guy, otherwise.. get whatever looks best and meets your budget.

I went with the highest numbers that would fit my budget. Read on the types. A winner will quickly emerge
Store sales poeple often are employed by manufacturers.

Did a quick check for TV ratings and you can pay $250.00 for a Insigina brand or $2,800 for a Sony XRB. Top rated sets in your budget are: LG UM7300 - $400.00 / Samsung UNS58RU71 - $530.00 / Samsung 55NU6950 - $430.00

How much do you use the Smart TV functions?

Where I live there is no broadcast signal available and there is no cable TV so everything has to be over the internet.

This means EVERYTHING has to be done with Smart TV functions so that is of high importance to us.

I have a Sony, an LG, and a Visio.

I prefer the Visio Smart TV functions over the Sony and the LG (though the LG looks the slickest with its air mouse and WebOS interface, it's more sluggish in response)

But with that being said, I have a Roku ultra on the Visio and it's much better than the built in stuff. The Roku remote also controls the TV so you only need one remote.

I have Rokus on the others too but only the Visio (Man Cave) gets the Ultra version so I can plug in an external HDD with local movies.

If looking at Best Buy, don't dismiss the Open Box items.

You may be able to get a better TV well inside your price range (I got the above LG for a steal because it was a display unit and had a dent in the metal on the back where you'll never see it. Full warranty and pulling up the info from the TV showed that it had been powered on for only 16 hours. Sold!)

Also, if they are showing you TVs on display, make sure you look at picture settings.

At one store the TV they were seemingly pushing had a display set to "Vivid" where the others were normal. Guess they were getting a better kickback on that one.

    Good Luck in your quest!

We use the smart TV stuff all the time, more than the cable. I’d like to ditch the cable actually.

Yeah I’m good with open box but I’d like to have the TV in hand today.

Appreciate the advice on the Visio smart TV functions. I really, really want to be able to use the built in stuff so it’s one less remote, not sure how DAU a Roku remote can combine with my cable and my other stuff.

So I bought a Visio M-series. 55”. Turns out we are more like 8’ from the TV so this size is more than adequate. Beautiful TV, love the color, love the features, great choice. Bought the extended warranty.

Appreciate all the advice offered, particularly from @Taco_Coma.

    Mostly dust and dirt.
I usually stick to TV’s built by Sharp. They have a good picture and tend to last a long time.

TCL is going to be your best budget TV brand. Then Sony, Samsung, and LG in no particular order cause it varies on size and features.

So I don’t recommend the Visio M-Series. First set, remote often didn’t work at all. Tried everything, new batteries, pulling power from the TV for a few minutes, etc. Swapped it out at Best Buy. After two days the second TV does the same. Stay away from this one. Taking it back for another brand tomorrow.

I have a small Vizio in the kitchen and it's junk. The apps hardly work and it just doesn't cut the mustard. I'll never buy another Vizio.
