That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

When planning our MOAB trip that never happened (thanks Rona) I saved his # in my phone. Figured if I did that the fact I was prepared would give us good luck
Yep the truck is called Trailmater and is an impressive offroad machine in it's own right.

Wow. I just wasted 45 min at work reading this masterpiece. Thanks everyone!!

This was good for so many LOL's. Its painfully evident that the OP has almost no experience doing this on a trail. Except his one donkey recovery in the baja? I don't usually brink my donkeys on the trail to aid in recovery and act as anchor points.

I would like to make a point on a comment from the origional post that i don't think we've touched on yet:

Even in the over complicated faux military world of modern overlanding, you would get ZERO style points for a stunt like this. Time is money, and the time it takes to rig up some block system just so I can use an underpowered winch that i MAYBE saved $250 on, is just not worth the time. We have shit to do and other trucks to get through tight spots. If i pulled that stunt on the trail...everyone would leave my ass behind so fast and never run a trail with me again.

His whole premise is weight savings, performance drops, monetary savings and the apparent "tough guy image" of having a big winch. Its all just an incorrect flawed opinion.

Nobody is making fun of you for being a little dick tough guy when you come to save their ass and you have a plate bumper and a big ass winch on your truck. They are stoked you are prepared and have more than enough pulling power to get their truck off the side of the mountain. I don't live in a city, driving around my "big honkin winch" to work is the norm here. Everyone drives their big truck with their big winch to work because when you head up in the mountains you want to be able to get yourself out quickly, not at the speed and mercy of a 4:1 block system.

Sure you have to mount your winch to that 1k plate bumper...but you were going to buy that plate bumper any way. It serves many more purposes than just holding your winch. I slam my bumper into so much shit, and have smoked a number of deer...its paid for itself 10x over, the bumper is not a factor in the winch equation.

Again, my truck was getting a lift and better springs anyway. So it won't ride like a sloppy joe sandwhich because I planned ahead and compensated for the weight. So performance loss due to the weight, also not a factor in your proposed disadvantages.

I'm glad you said this. I know someone who lost a friendship over a winch argument. It wasn't pretty. I'd be pissed if I went wheeling with a group of guys and they all had to set up a bunch of blocks and it took each of them 15 minutes to pull 6".

My opinion, is the time I spend setting up the MA system takes far longer than a single pull. Id rather spend the money on not wasting my time, then spending my time by saving a hundred or so bucks. Just the opinion of a man with a 10k smittybuilt winch

I completely agree! I value my personal time, which is why I wouldn't want to spend any more time than necessary on a recovery. They print money every day.

Not only that, but you're gonna need 400 feet of rope (wire, or synthetic) Thats insane. Most winches only come with about 100 feet.
