Never got it installed. The box of parts is still sitting there.... staring at me... mocking me for being so lazy and lame.

I have a softtopper on my truck and drove it daily onto the State Police Main HQ while I worked there. Believe me when I say if a third light was needed I would have heard about it. Also have had it inspected every year since new (2013) with nothing ever said. So much for ALL 50 states requiring them.

@EatSleepTacos Just received these parts in. Any tips on doing the install. Pretty new to doing some of these electrical type installs. Thanks

I was told by the local dealership that I would now fail inspection in Virginia with the Softopper on. Passed last year.
My next door neighbor is a State Cop who inspects inspection stations. He has never mentioned it.
Take it off before inspection back on after. Problem solved I guess.

Did you get that exact LED strip in the Amazon listing? It's crap. I had two of them die in less than a year from water ingress.

Yeah, I did. Still haven't installed them. I've seen a few installs floating around with a plastic housing that looks like a traditional brake light. I might wait until my bed rack come in and mount it to the back of that.

I ended up with this one. I have it on my tailgate for low vehicles which may be tailgating me: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MN9XYIG/ The circuit board is molded in clear silicone, so it's less likely to leak. Still requires a bit of work on my end (substituting included tape with proper 3M molding tape, two layers of heat shrink at wire exit for strain relief), but the end result is reliable:
