ditch light wiring please help!

I posted this in the lighting thread with no bites, i have no idea why this is so hard for me to wrap my brain around but i cant seem to get it to even light the switch.


Hey pair of ditch lights I installed.

I have this mictuning 2 lead wiring harness

I have an air on board push button switch that I cant seem to figure out how to wire up.

The air on board switch has 4 wires:

1 red
1 green
1 blue
1 black

the mictuning harness had quick connects that made it 4 wires by having the white have 2 wires that I cut off to get through firewall and was going to but connect anyhow, it has:

1 black
1 white
1 blue


I have read a lot on this on other posts and I can't seem to get this figured out because there is so many different posts about add a fuse options and tapping into accessory wires, people that understand electrical make it sound so easy. unfortunately that is just not me.

I want the led on only when the truck is on ideally.

If anybody could shed some light that would be great.

 

Could you provide pictures of the switch? Is it a rocker switch or push switch? LED Lit when on or off? The wiring is usually (not a professional) as below.

Red = Hot
Black = Ground
Other colors could be to light it up with your dash lights or to power a top vs bottom LED within the switch.

 

Get an ohmmeter and a 9V battery. I don't know what the colors are but you'll find that two of the wires are for the switch. You'll get continuity with the switch on and nothing with it off.

The other two wires will likely be for switch lighting. If it's an incandescent polarity won't matter(but nobody does that). It's likely LED so use the 9V battery to find the positive and negative wire for the light.

The negative will go to ground and the positive can be done a couple different ways. Put it ahead of the switch and it'll be on constantly if hooked directly to the battery, or on when the truck is running if powered from an ignition hot source. If you connect it to the circuit going to feed your lights, it will only light up when you turn the ditch lights on.

By having separate wires for the internal lights you can also connect this to the factory dimmer circuit. Keep in mind that the factory dimmer uses a pulse width modulated signal where the positive is always 12V to ground and the negative will vary between 0 to 12V with respect to ground as the dimmer is operated. That really doesn't matter, the key thing here is that you'd need to tie into both wires from the dimmer if you went this route.

So I believe below is a similar wiring diagram to what you have currently with the blue you have being equal to "red 2" below.


So to make it simple.

SWITCH
Green = Connect to your battery.
Red 1 = Connect to White cable from your Mictuning relay.
Red 2 (probably Blue on your switch) = Connects to dashboard lights so it'll come on when you turn on headlights. This doesn't have to be done for it to work so you can wait on this for now. Otherwise you'll need to get an add-a-fuse or splice into a wire which we don't need to do test.
Black = Ground.

HARNESS:
Black = Ground
White = Connect to Red 1 On Switch.

To be honest, I use this dual harness for my ditch lights and have used other mictuning harnesses before and don't ever recall a blue wire in them. I'm not sure what it would be used for.

 

so the above is exactly how I "thought" it should be done as well but it doesn't seem to want to work.

very strange... guess i will have to play with it some more.

 

So I got these working after a bunch of screwing around I was like this doesn't make sense I popped out the fuse and switched it to a 15 amp from the 7.5 that was in there, it now works.

now all I have to do is figure out where to tap the dash light (blue wire) on the switch but the lights work.

black switch to black harness
green switch to blue harness
red switch to white harness
blue to accessory.

PS I feel like a moron for not testing a new fuse and didnt want post this but thought I should if anyone else has the same issue in future and I couldn't find anything on these exact models anywhere.

 

Where? So you were blowing fuses and decided to UP the amps...

So the switch is always illuminated now..if that's what you wanted. And also can be turned ON with vehicle off...

 

No the fuse was dead from the start it never blew, the switch never illuminated at all. I think it was a bad fuse.

right now the switch is only illuminated when i press the button to turn on the lights which is fine for now but I need to hook up the blue wire to an accessory wire and it should come on only when the dash lights come on.

and yes you can turn lights on when truck is off

I just need to know what wire the dash lights are.....
