Trans Issue?

My 3rd gen does this. If I let it roll back far enough, ABS will kick in as you described. If I feather the gas, I can go forwards and backwards slightly as if I were in a manual.

It's no big deal.

 

These trucks were known to come low on transmission fluid from the factory .
If this is the case , you will notice the truck will roll backwards as the transmission pump starves for fluid .
Another symptom to add to the list is the transmission may slip going around corners.

If the transmission is filled with fluid and the truck continues to roll backwards on hills , its not going to damage any internals inside the transmission .
The stator inside the torque converter is spinning too slow to turn the transmission input shaft and overcome the weight of the truck
As long as the transmission is full of fluid and your pump is functioning correctly ,everything inside the transmission is being lubricated properly

 

Now that’s a detailed description you will NOT get from Toyota service department.

Similar topic. Could you point me to instructions on fluid level checking a '14 RAV4 FWD transaxle?

I'm sure it's similar, but likely not exactly the same.

Fortunately my '13 Tacoma has a dipstick.

hey everyone! got my truck back today, 8/26! said yesterday they couldn't get to it until 8/31, so happy about that. like you all predicted the dealer said it was normal. for now I am not going to worry about it, it shifts and runs just fine, it's just in that one very narrow parameter that it seems odd. I've had it for 4.5 years now and it's done it twice ever. both were in the last 2 days, but whatever. the tech said everything is normal with the truck, asked if he checked the trans fluid level on the advice of @gearcruncher and he said it all checked out. said i would have had it back sooner, but he wanted to be sure so he checked it and it takes a while. given all of this and all the members here who say it's fine, who are definitely way more unlikely to lie than a dealer, i am considering the issue closed. push come to shove, it's in my vehicle record for the warranty. thanks for all the help everyone! talk to y'all soon!
