On more than one occasion I have wondered if I could make the same money driving a forklift at Home Depot.

    I cannot.

No kidding. I stand between the devs and our team of top-level support guys. At least the devs are starting to trust me when I say something is wrong these days.

I've always wanted a full time job that is really two (or more) part time jobs wearing a trenchcoat, like driving a truck and building a database. Last time I had one like that was amazing, but it was for a nonprofit as a summer gig, so not something I could make happen full time.

A different lifetime ago I drove a dump truck. To this day every time I see one I think, that wasn't a bad job.

But, today's challenge is getting a user to update the software on their internet facing website.

So you're not on board with the synergies of the new disruptive cloud-first paradigm?

Me neither  Its a house of cards.

I literally said 3 years ago when they started down this path:

"Your choices are cheap, fast, and secure, and you can only pick two. Going to a cloud provider takes security off the table, so for your sake I hope it's cheap because you'll pay through the ass on your first breach."

We already own world-class facilities that have EVERYTHING we need to be our own provider. We already are. We have saved ZERO dollars by going to cloud services.

This is something I've never understood about companies that have their own, well established infrastructure. They have this notion that once things are put in the cloud costs, deployment time and all the ailes them are magically no longer a problem. Often times however, there is no thought put into design, growth, security etc and they end up with an poorly functioning cloud eco-system and have to fall back to their on-prem infrastructure because the monthly costs have ballooned our of control and they have nothing to show for it.

That's why you should always have your servers use UTC! Also stick with ISO8601 timestamps!
