The title is derpy, I know.. probably right up there with which lift to buy.

My fuel pump shit the bed, luckily at the end of my driveway and not in the middle of nowhere. What is a decent replacement for a 3.4? Better yet, what is one to stay away from? I think I should replace the assembly and not just the pump and I have a feeling I will be replacing the tank as well seeing as it's a MN truck. Thank you for any recommendations on which brand pump to buy.

Your sure it is the pump that failed?

Denso # 951-0001 Unless your looking for more fuel volume then stock

Get a fuel pump bracket if possible.

It can turn into a Major project with rusted seized fuel lines.

+1 on the Denso. Also recommend picking up a new gasket for the sending unit.

Thank you for your reply. Not entirely certain, but the gauge went out a couple of years back, but the low light warning still worked until Friday. I thought I was possibly out of fuel so I put in 2 gallons and it still cranks and cranks. Prior to it not starting, I noticed a slight surge at partial throttle and bucking under harder acceleration. I attributed it to a failing pump. I have a CEL on but it shows an evap code and nothing else. I'm pretty certain the top of the tank is crusty and leaking as I smell fumes near the side of the truck.

I did have a frame replacement along with new lines done a few years back, so I'm hoping it won't be too terrible. I guess I'm just preparing for the top of the tank to be bad. I looked here on TW and saw a parts list for the tank and associated parts; holy shit that is gonna add up! The OG pump and tank have 210k on them.

the fumes you smell and EVAP code is most likely the seal on top of the gas tank is leaking because of corrosion around that sending unit cover, if you get a flashlight peak in between the gap between the rear of the cab and front of the bed youl probably see wet spots around that fuel sending flange and the top of the gas tank leaking gas, my 04 access cab had the exact same scenario,

great thanks. I'll take a look, not sure if the position is different on my double cab, but I'll see. Maybe I'll get lucky and just and need a seal around the flange? That would be nice, what did you end up doing with your leaking scenario?

I would replace the pump with a new DENSO while your in there that's what I did at over 200k miles you wont regret not doing it later, use a thin layer of grey RTV on the new seal helps, the EVAP code senses a leak in the sealed system. if you smell fumes stepping out of the truck 99.9% of the time its that seal and corrosion. just look for wet spots around that top sending unit flange that'll be it. easiest way remove the bed slide it back gives you access, search the web on how to bed removal pretty easy, better than dropping the tank

I’m trying to determine if denso offers a complete assembly and not just the pump. So far I’m not seeing an option for the entire assembly.

you get just the pump and a new filter sock, you take out the old one and put together the new one with the new sock, easy, no need for new assembly I think the gen2 trucks get a full assembly

no problem hardest part is lifting off the bed after you break the bed bolts, impact wrench makes short work of the bolts, also the bed bolts are of high grade steel and wont snap like a lot of others, you might hear a lot of screeching when they start coming out, once you get them broke loose alittle hit a couple shots of WD40 on the threads area, after that 2 guys pick up the bed and remove easy with the short quad cab bed, then the fat lady sings

if you have a short quad cab, its 4 bolts unplug the taillights/license plate lights, unbolt gas filler neck lift off the frame and work on it with the gas tank still in place

if you need a new tank you probably need new straps also, SPECTRA brand makes those replacements at ROCKAUTO

Working on the fuel pump tonight. I did order a new sending unit from Spectre and a Denso pump. While examining the wiring harness for the pump and sending unit, I found most the wires are frayed and broken! I suspect that’s why my gauge and pump don’t work.

I still plan on replacing the sending ol unit and pump, but does someone make a pigtail for the sending unit? This thing is a mess, the pic is shit, but it’s the gray lead.
