Hey all, I am fairly new to the forum and currently in the market for my first (2nd gen) Tacoma. I did an search but was not able to find any discussions of issues to look for at higher mileages. I read through the stickied maintenance discussions and will look for those issues such as the front end vibration.

It seems like there's not really much to be afraid of in terms of high mileage on these engines, but are 150k+ mile examples going to be long-trip (4+ hour) capable without issue? Wondering if anyone has any advice on some hidden issue they wish they had known about while shopping. Thanks!

Since you have a 2012 the only thing I could think of would be the secondary air pump failing, other than that most high mile problems seem to happen with the 05/06 trucks

For an 05 like mine, with a possible head gasket issue just waiting in the wings, 129 K is getting up there.

I have an 06, bad head gasket and motor mounts have sunk into the frame. But that’s not a problem in the newer 2nd gens

i have a 08 i drive every day and just got done with a 1000 mile roadtrip. 320k.
i will say the only issues ive had are the wheel bearing and the cv axles. but those failing were my fault. put the truck in water up to the sliders.

a good thing to do is get a mechanic or toyota to check it over and tell you if thigns are solid.

    No comprendo?

You say you are in the market for your FIRST 2nd Gen, but your avatar shows 2012 DSCB TRD. Did you buy that truck after making your opening post?

As long as it's been maintained well, I don't have any issues buying a 2nd gen up to 200k miles assuming it's a good deal of course. After 250k miles, they are still rock solid, but that's definitely getting up there. You can expect to run a 2nd gen to 350k I'd say depending how it's been used/maintained.

If you can get one under 100k miles, you will not have any issues to worry about.

I wouldn’t hesitate to take my 07 w 200,000 across the country. Just make sure all the maintenance has been done on time and check the frame for rust.

At higher mileages there are many more things to pay attention to other than the engine. A simple compression/leakdown test will validate it's health, where many other things require inspection.

You don't give a location, but rusty frame is the 1st thing to look for on any salt country truck.

Sorry all - I joined after (I thought) completing a purchase that ultimately fell through for issues not related to me (dealer crappiness). So I am in the market again. That one did not pan out.

Currently I am peeking at a 2015 with 140k on it. Seems very high for the age, but I guess it must be mostly highway...

I’m not married to my truck, I flip them before 100k, of course that’s 15 yrs for me since I’m retired. A little below 100k and you get a good return on your original investment, they sell fast, buyer happy, seller happy.
Plus I don’t have to replace the little stuff that starts to go. Yep, 15 yrs and it’s time to move on. Let the young guys replace stuff. I’m on my 4th tacoma truck and everyone I sold, the first person that looked at it bought it.
That’s just the way I roll.

Dont worry about a "4 hr road trip". Think about all the "hours" that it took for the truck to reach 150,000 miles with no problems :)

I'm at 79k on my 2015 and I thought that was a lot. 140k would be too much for me.

I’m at 175k and just got back from a 3.5 hour there and 3.5 hour back trip with no issues. I’ve done it twice with this truck since getting it at 157k. Didn’t even hiccup.

Maintenance is everything with these trucks, barring you avoid 05’s due to head gasket issues and don’t live on the salt death roads.

It is all in how you maintain it:

    '93 4Runner w 413K and counting
    '97 Chevy C1500 5.7L w 293K and counting
2 '87 Chevy Nova's bought the same day (built in partnership w Toyota, just basically a Carolla) one w 187K, the other w 192K
    2012 Ford Fusion w 235K
    2007 Ford Ranger w 193K and counting

Good oil every 3,000 to 5,000 REGARDLESS of what the mfg says is the proper oil change interval. Air filters changed at 15K. DO the rest of the PM recommended per the owner's manual. You ought to be good to go for at least 400K with that second gen. Unless the previous owner flogged it like a rented mule.

I have a 2009 Double Cab SR5 4x4 with 290k miles located in SoCal. I've kept my truck as near as pristine as possible with high quality parts, regular maintenance, but also using my truck a lot. I was 35k miles a year with every other weekend on long camping trips, 6+ hr drives.

    Around 100k miles
-Suspension refresh: New shocks (bilstein 5100 OEM upgrade), springs (Old Man Emu), leaf pack (dealer recall, OEM replacement), lower control arms (Moog OEM replacement), upper control arms (JBA aftermarket upgrade)

    Around 200k miles
-Suspension refresh: New shocks & springs (Icon performance), leaf pack (All Pro Expo), lower control arms (Moog OEM Replacement)

    Around 250k miles
-Water pump, rear axle seals, rear axle wheel bearings, A/C shrader valves & A/C recharge, front radiator support bushings, drive side sun shade replacement

    Around 290k miles
-Front wheel bearings, carrier bearing, rear drive shaft u-joints, fan clutch, lower control arms (Moog OEM Replacement)

I skipped over oil changes, trans flush, differential oil, spark plugs etc, which are all a part of regular maintenance. Outside of regular maintenance I experienced the above. When your truck get above 200k miles, you will have to replace some parts simply because of age. Bushing will wear and need replacement, bearing will wear and need replacement.

My truck has never left me stranded. I have full confidence in it and taking me across country on a 16+ hr drive. What I am really surprised with is how tight the interior still is. No rattles or squeaks. The seat still feels firm, fabric is still in good condition, etc. Painting is getting thin from being an outside kept truck in the SoCal sun. I might need to invest in a paint job in a few years.
