Toyota recall on 3rd gen frame rust

Toyota trucks don't have an inherent rust problem as much as people like to think they do... all vehicles in the northeast do. People have latched onto this idea that since it's a Toyota it will run forever, but that's simply not true in the harsh northeast. People want to keep their trucks for 20 years but they don't once think about rinsing all the salt off during the winter. No vehicle will take care of itself.

 

So I made an appointment today for the inspection,and CRC to be applied to the truck.Taking it to state college pa. toyota and it is gonna be the end of month as there are many in front of me.they told me I would need to leave it there for 3 to 4 days so they can make sure it is clean and 100 percent dried out.will not be spraying anything on outside of frame only the inside will get treated.i said shouldn't you do the outside as well,and he stated this was how all trucks per Toyota with CRC are being applied.anyone else get there truck back yet if this is what was done to yours?

 

I've seen domestic full size trucks have extensive rust within 10 years old throughout here in connecticut. The crap the dot sprays on the roads before a winter storm is like battery acid.

 

We're fortunate in NC, the few times a year it does snow we get a light coat of salt and that's it. It doesn't get caked on vehicles and even if it does, within a few days it warms up again so you can hose it all off. Unfortunately I think up there it's kinda a constant cycle of snow/brine rinse&repeat so you rarely get a chance to get it off.

 

I don’t know where you got your information but that 12.5 tons is not even a truck load

 

My 2017 looks the same in all the areas of your pictures..Gonna try and set up and appointment ASAP

 

Good catch! I should have looked at the table closer. Must be that is per mile usage.

 

How did PA not make that list!? I grew up there and it’s definitely not zero

Got mine done last week. They added some frame plugs and put white goo on most of the seams

 

Mdfm31 that's crazy cause I'm getting mine done at Joel coffer in state college pa.the end of this month and they told me that per Toyota they were only doing the inside of my frame.wth.

 

They did supposedly clean and treat the inside of the boxes section as well. The other white spray you see is wool wax applied by myself.

 

Same for connecticut.

My 2017 does not show up on the recall. The frame has a fair amount of rust. Currently, I'm stuck in the Chicagoland area for another 5-6 years. It seems the way to remove the snow and ice from the roads is salt before, during, and after the winter weather with no plowing necessary. The salt list above for Illinois should be split between and Illinois and Chicagoland, Chicago would the highest salt usage in the nation.

 

My 2019 came with the plugs. No goop on seams no goop inside boxed part of frame. I fluid filmed when I brought truck home. Following spring I power washed under. Following fall I got under and there was still a ton of fluid film left. I loaded it with wool wax. In any hole, crevices,seams. This past spring I power washed under again. Today I powered washed to prepare for my annual wool wax. Honestly there is so much under there with a spring wash and another today that I probably do not need it again. But I'm still going to unload a gallon under there. Those who say it comes off with road splash never used it or didn't apply enough.

 

What was the treatment / procedure called that you had performed? Did you have the "Corrosion Resistant Compound" sprayed or a complete frame switch?

I have an appointment with the dealer next week to inspect my rusted 17' frame...All info would be appreciated...Any before pictures ?

 

It was the CRC treatment. I don't have any before pictures, but my frame is in pretty good shape to begin with. They only clean and treat inside the boxed section and added the seam sealer and plugs.

 

Just curious if you have a pic of the plugs they put in. I was under mine this weekend doing a Woolwax treatment and noticed there were plugs in and around the rocker panels, but nothing much outside of that area. Then as I got closer to the tranny area, there are holes that have black tape material over them on the frame. Just curious if they did anything to mine before I owned it. I also discovered an interesting rubber fitting that is sort of pictured in your post. It goes into the frame and looks like you would run wire through it. It's on both sides of the truck and I shot woolwax in there as well. Just curious if anyone knows what that is for.
