Low Cost Rear Trail Lights!

I have been looking a some Ridged lights for the rear of my truck for wheeling and over landing. I did not really want to spend the $300-$400 on a set of quality off road LED lights but after recent over landing trip I really need more light for night time wheeling and trailer connection. I found this set up and am very pleased so far with the cost ($14) and performance of the upgrade:

install was 6 bolts and took 10mins. It’s like having rear headlights on the truck. Simply replaces the very dim factory reverse lights with 2200 lumen LED lamps. Plug and play swap!

I also replace my fog lights with a similar set up. Now my fog light are twice as bright as my headlights. Image above shows one fog light replaced and other is factory as FYI.

 

I hope you turn off your fog lights when you meet other vehicles on the road. Don’t be that asshole that blinds everyone else on the road with your LED fog lights. BTW, now with all the light scatter, they’re not fog lights anymore.

 

I just installed them so I have not had a chance to “be that asshole” yet. I typically use them off road as I live in AZ and there’s not a lot of fog here.

I kept the factory housings and ray kits so I expect the light throw to be the same as the factory pattern only brighter and the front of the LED lamps have a narrow lens on them. I expect the “light scatter” your referring to is light flat from the camera lens on my phone. Physics are physics, the patter of the light should be identical excluding the added lending on the front of the LED lamp.

I will do some testing next time it rains here, likely in 2021 or 2022 lol and let you know if it turns out to be an issue, after all there is a reason why aftermarket LED lamps are not DOT approved for street use. Also will need to watch back up lights as they are literally 10x as bright as factory, also not DOT approved.

I’m replacing front bumper soon anyway and factory fog lights will be deleted so there that too. I will keep an eye out for you and make sure I don’t blind you! Lol

 

update: you can see In the image attached with both LED lights that the left fog light does not show the “scatter” based on the angle of the camera lens when compared to the right fog light. Will take some additional photos and post them later.

yea, sort of think comparing my 1200 lumen fog lights to 7000 lumen head lights is a bit of a stretch. But hey it’s a free country. I would also point i that my head light are stock. Just sayin.

it’s a great write up, thanks for sending it over. I’m going to do some testing my my light meter and compare the Alla fog lamps I got to stock and see how they do with the front lenses on them compared to stock.
