In my neck of the woods we all have remote starters, and I can re-engage my lock out mode, so that I can take out the key while its running and lock it. If someone gets in and hits the brakes, it stalls. It's good for grabbing mail, or dropping the kid off at daycare without shutting the truck off.

I rebuilt the solenoid on my Prerunner about a year ago.

15 minutes from underneath the truck and the starter on the ground. Two Bolts a power cable stud and a connector. Same time going back in.

4X4 I heard was a pain in the rear.

Usually the only thing that goes bad is the solenoid which can be rebuilt with new contacts for less than 40 dollars. And the brushes are also very easy, but should last a good long time.
