I bought the truck new in December 2004 and ran it basically stock for 15 years. I'll include several pics that I can dig up before and after on this and follow this with the 2nd post containing the build info. Most recent on top.

The new suspension, and the start of tinkering, really began in 2020 after 15 years and 155k miles. Here we are in 2020 down at the Padre Island National Seashore going after some reds:
    PINS 2020 Tacoma.jpg

Here's how we rocked the first 15 years. The only real additions are the snugtop cap and some 17" FJ rims and slightly larger tires my buddy had no use for.

    Drivetrain, Body and Frame

    Suspension and Tires
    • 315/75/16 Milestar Patagonia MTs
    • Method 701 Beadgrips - 4.5 BS
    • Alpine Designs CMR, beaten pinch weld
    • 63s are on using the RuffStuff kit. Bilstein 14" Short Bodies with BAMF relocation.
    • Fenders trimmed -- shi$$y job ... oh well.
    • Bilstein 5100s up front ~ 2.25" ... 14" 5100s in the rear
    • Headstrong 2" coils
    • Headstrong AAL
    • Dirtking Bushing UCAs - definitely recommended with the lift
    • BTF LCAs that move the BJ forward 3/4". AWESOME
    • 1/2" top hat spacers

    Armor

    Recovery

    • Ironman 4x4 9500lb synthetic winch - replacing the battery in the control sucks. if you go this route get some spare batteries and put them in the glove box. They're not a normal size.
    • ARB 17.5k snatch strap
    • A few tree savers, soft shackles and D rings
    • 60" hi-lift -- I'm a fan. Versatile. Use wisely. Bad press by careless people?

    Electrical

    Miscellaneous:
    • ARB Twin compressor mounted in bed cubby - expedition essentials - I don't think I'd go this route again b/c I have to maintain this and getting it in/out really sucks
    • Maaco paint job late 2019. primary goal was the rusted roof. Check!
    • Diff relocation mod: Differential Breather Mod for Dummies (Pics)

    Want list -- probable order:
    • new ARB manifold ... can't get mine to stop leaking -- argh
    • winter survival kit
    • HC rear bumper w/ swingout - coastal offroad or DIY.
    • new front setup once I get the truck back full time and my kid isn't driving it everywhere.
    • driver seat -- mine is ripped,. probably from knife in my pocket getting in/out
    • new radio
    • GMRS mounted
    • finish my HAM test and get a HAM mounted with APRS

Thanks to Keith, Amanda and Cecil at Austin Mobile welding for putting these sliders on this morning. Keith shared a video of his old LT Tacoma jumping the pismo dunes back in the day.

    clean welds ...

These sliders from 4x are awesome. I put them to the test immediately after the install and I can say I have all the confidence in the world in their ability to protect the truck.

Teady to be primed and painted -- after prep, I used rustoleum self-etching and their truck bed coating -- same as the sliders
    IMG_0121.jpg

I did re-route the exhaust but I may take another pass at it since it's REALLY REALLY close. It's actually more than close. The armor is pushing it up which I know isn't good lol.
    IMG_0148.jpg

    IMG_0149.jpg

Trying a few new lines that limited us before -- nothing to worry about now.
    IMG_0150.jpg

    IMG_0184.jpg

the diff also held up well - one ledge had a rock that basically creeps out a bit too far right in the middle of the only way up. We thought we had it -- it was pretty muddy / slippery, and barealy missed. one or 2 rock placements later and we rolled right up.

Truck looks good. When I first saw the title I thought that a spoiled 15 year old got a truck for his birthday but this is much cooler.

oh sh&t -- I should probably change the title. My 14 year loves the trails as much as me, is an excellent spotter, and is probably counting down the days hahaha.

I swear this thing saved me $$ the first 15 years and now I'm in a free fall down the rabbit hole.

Installed a twin ARB in the bed cubby over the weekend with the expedition essentials mount. All fairly straightforward. I did have to extend the wiring to go from front to back.

I left the manifold out and will re-install once I get to the lockers later this summer. Overall it works as expected, and I love that it is so accessible in the rear. HF has air stations but this will be great for the seashore and other trips.

Finally got some time and the courage to glue together the coastal off-road front bumper. I have a ton of grinding, cleanup and painting to do followed by the winch and final install.

315/75/16 Milestar Patagonia MTs with 701 bead grips
    • alpine designs CMR
    • removed the front fenders
    • beat the pinch weld
    • jig-sawed the bottom portion of the front fender
    • moved my LCA rear cams forward and front cams back - DIY Alignment looks good. TMR Toe tool came in handy - I think I'm good. Going to do more cycling/clearance work and hit the dirt a time or 2 and may get an alignment or at least get the current numbers to see how my garage alignment panned out. It drives great
    • 1" BORA spacer to clear the UCA. This does not help the fender well but with the bumps I think I'm OK. One day soon I'll cycle the suspension.

    TODO:
    • remove front shocks and full cycle to see where I have issues
    • hit the dirt

Sure. But I haven't done a bit of research to assess the value. They have 24k miles on them. Installed January 14, 2020. I took this pic yesterday in the garage. The other 3 look alike. They've been great. No complaints. Also, one of the hub caps / center piece (if that's the right word) is missing. And I have 24 black lugs you could have, but I don't have a 2nd lug key. Or you could use your own lugs? Maybe PM me an offer or I'll dig around and toss out a price in the next few days? I'm in Austin - would definitely prefer a local pickup if possible or I could drop them somewhere in the general area. Thanks.

great to finally get this taken care of. I ditched the fender liners as I'm getting ready to trim the fenders a bit more and wanted this done first. There is SO much space in there now. I have my ARB in the bed cubby but taking it out tomorrow -- GEARS AND F&R LOCKERS ARRIVE THIS WEEK -- to get ready for the gear/locker install. I may see if it fits well in there or not.

The 488s and F&R ARBs are in. Now I need to figure out how to drive 500 miles for the break-in before more dirt.

The old 3rd out and the new about to go in:
    upload_2022-2-10_6-56-55.jpg

    upload_2022-2-10_6-57-19.jpg

Now onto the front. Here's the OEM CV next to the NAPA CV -- I have another OEM on the bench that I need to re-boot to use as my spare when one of these goes.
    upload_2022-2-10_6-58-1.jpg

The front diff was tough. Hats off to anyone that does that solo. The 12mm next nut holding the front diff in place is a bolt you don't see everyday:
    upload_2022-2-10_6-58-58.jpg upload_2022-2-10_6-59-8.jpg

Its out -- time to swap some parts from the old to the new:
    upload_2022-2-10_6-59-34.jpg

In our case, I had a buddy and we basically got under the truck side by side right under the diff. That was the easiest to basically share the weight and fit it into place. My hiccup was the small breather tube from the diff to the bracket. That came loose ... so ... I removed the arm bolts and ket it hang down. Then I had to remove the bracket (12mm) from the diff to move the tube back into the diff accepter rod/tube. Once done, it took another 15 minutes of patience to get that bracket and bolt back into the thread on the diff. Damn I don't want to do that again.

The shakedown drives are great. I just need miles at this point. I also installed the twin ARB back in the cubby. I'm not convinced this is the best spot b/c if I ever need to do any fixing / maintenance on the lines / solenoids they're tucked way up in the bedside and it's not easy getting that in/out ... but, all works now so I'm hoping for plenty of trouble free miles!

ECGS 488s with the ARB -- 10/10 at this point. I was able to simply put my old diffs back in their packaging and drop them at UPS the next day,. Awesome setup.

Finally trimmed the fenders -- ready for the trails if I can find the time.

Tom Woods for the win. I came down hard on the DS awhile back and had some pretty terrible vibrations and a visibly dented DS. I may take the original to a shop to see if they can balance / salvage it, but this one-piece exceeded my expectations. Install was a breeze and the truck drives great!

FINALLY got the 63s and 7100s with the BAMF relocation on the truck. I need to lengthen the bumps, but in the garage it looks like I should be good for about 5 up and 8 down with a bit to spare on each end. The road test was awesome. I did have 2 bed bolts complete seized so once I get that taken care of we'll see how she does in the rocks. I would have paid decent $$$ for a plasma cutter while working those axle tabs off ...

Nice build! I'm about to pull the trigger on a set of skids and sliders for 4xinnovations. Your thread had the only good pics of their skid setup that I could find. Much appreciated! Look forward to seeing more updates on your truck.

Added the BTF Fabrication Lower Control Arms that push the LBJ forward 3/4". My current BJs and bushings were shot so I figured I'd give this a try to see if I could knockout a bunch of issues together. So far it's a big SUCCESS -- the install was a breeze. No more popping from the old LCAs. The front simply feels tighter and more in tune with the road. I can't wait to get them off road and see where I'll eventually be tubbing when I finally get to the point of wanting more up travel.
