I’m 5.29 + 275/80/17 (34.5x11) soon since I’m always up in Tahoe - that altitude without more gear = not fun lol.

if I lived on flat land and never went up in the mountains I’d go 4.88. All about the application - but for me, more gear the better. Especially when she goes Offroad it’ll be a beast and more fun not having to slip the clutch nearly as much

most guys with run 285s with the 2.7.

    4.88s are perfect for that

You probably need it with those big tires up in the mountains anyway. Your top speed gonna be what 75? :D

    Lol. 74mph at 3k rpm.

I usually drive 70 on the freeway so I’ll be spinning a cool 2800rpm. What I’m happy about is how much more peppy it’ll be around town with that kind of gearing. Right now on stock tires/gearing I have to slip the clutch quite a bit on an incline at a stop light (especially with the AC on leeching power).

I really need to drive the V6 on the highway for a while to see if the transmission/cruise control programming is shit or if the 4 banger is just under-powered for 80 mph.

I would not choose a 2.7 for heavy towing, or big loads, unless it was specifically for slow backroads type of use with realistic gearing/tires.
Plenty of juice for running light, however.
Either 2.7, 3.5 or 4.0 and both auto or manual transmission will last hundreds of thousands of miles if well taken care of and respected. Problems I've seen with Toyotas come from abuse and bad maintenance.
