Any woodworkers?

Yeah, the JWBS 14SFX. Had to drive down to Roanoke, VA to Woodcraft to get it. About 260 miles roundtrip.

 

Need to sand it dow to match

Not sure, maybe just the salad bowl poly stuff i cant think of the name

 

@tomwilson74 you ever figure out a good way to get glue off your clamps? I was thinking maybe wire wheel on bench grinder? Mine are starting to get messed up.

 

I used lacquer thinner first then a putty knife type of thing. Wax them after so the glue won’t stick as bad.

 

Well, figured it was about time to post in this thread. I'm 22 y/o and I've been building and refinishing furniture along with a lot of other wood based projects since I was about 14 or so. My latest project that I just finished a couple weeks ago was a live edge white ash island with a limestone inlay. I've got a bunch of refinishing work to do on miscellaneous furniture in the coming months so I will definitely post some updates. Enjoy the pictures

Mocking up the countertop....this white ash tree had to be taken down on our property because the emerald ash borers killed it and then my dad had it milled up into assorted sizes of lumber.


Glue up. I only glued two pieces at a time and I worked from the inside out trying to make sure everything stayed square and true.


Cut the ends flush, chamfered the exposed end of the island and then routed out recesses for the tile.


Here you can see the recesses for the tile a bit better. I wanted the tile to sit proud about 1/16" so they could be used as a built in coaster or trivet for small hot plates.


About 7 coats of wipe on poly and then glued the tiles in with liquid nails.


Here it is installed.

Little backstory on the house I built the countertop for. I spent most of my free time this summer helping a relative clean out and "flip" a house so he could rent it. He is going to remodel the house and live in it eventually but wanted time to work on the plans and save a little money. House was built in 1920 and had it's fair share of wear and tear. The floor you see in that picture is white oak but the previous owners had put down a glue on laminate floor in the '60s. So the black spots you see are actually glue and tar paper that were stuck down in recesses in the floor boards and the floor sander couldn't get to. I spent the better part of a weekend stripping the laminate and then sanding it off as best I could with a floor sander. Couldn't get all the glue and tar paper off by the end of the weekend so we did a couple more light passes to even things out and then called it. I personally like how it turned out and I think it looks like reclaimed barn lumber or something like that and fits the rustic look of the house. If I didn't know the backstory I'd probably think the same thing.

Thanks everyone. My current project is a little nightstand that I’ll be refinishing. It was given to me along with a bunch of other furniture when we were cleaning out the aforementioned house.

Dont have much in the way of before pictures, just this one from when I pulled it out of the basement it was in.

All the glue had dried up and the joints were coming apart, the top had come apart into two pieces as well.


Getting all the stain and finish off the legs and spindles was the hardest part. I had to scrape each flute individually on those legs and boy did that suck. Sanded the rest of them in the lathe using 120grit then 220 then 320. Still some marks left in them from sanding and from tooling when they were made which will always bother me but it’s very hard to remove finish from and sand anything that’s turned. So I decided to do it the kinda quick and dirty way. That being said since this table had quite a few imperfections and all the pieces of wood were a different color I decided to use a liquid stain before poly. I’m generally not a fan of staining wood especially if the grain is clear and I can get it nice and smooth, but sadly that wasn’t the case here.


Still can’t figure out what kind of wood this is...I’m thinking cherry, maple or birch?? It has very wavy grain on the top too. If anyone has any ideas let me know. The table had and lot number and item number on the bottom so I’m assuming a bunch of them might’ve been made.



Used minwax colonial maple stain and I was actually pleasantly surprised at how good it turned out. The top might be tricky since the grain is so wavy and the colors are uneven. Hopefully this will be wrapped up in the next week or so.

 

I can't believe you are 22. Great work, and it looks like you have knowledge, wisdom and skills beyond your years. I'd hire you in a heartbeat!!
