Worst fires in Oregon since 2017. When the west side of the Cascades is on fire everywhere, you know it's bad. Road closures on major arteries, motels evacuating, it's pretty grim with the most road closures I've ever seen.

    Fire-related road closures in Oregon
    • Santiam Highway (OR 20) between Sweet Home and Santiam Junction
    • McKenzie Highway (OR 126) 4 miles west of McKenzie Bridge MP 47
    • McKenzie Highway (OR 126) intersection with Santiam Highway (OR 20) MP 0-13
    • Highway 22 intersection with Santiam Highway (OR 20) MP 82-13
    • Oregon 99, 2 miles north of Phoenix MP 9-17
    • Oregon 211 between Hayden Road and Highway 213
    • Oregon 213 intersection with Woodburn - Estacada Highway MP 16
    • Oregon 138, 2 miles west of Glide MP 16-47
    • Oregon 97 north of Klamath Falls
    • Oregon 224 east of Estacada MP 27-50
    • Oregon 224 Eagle Creek MP 18-50
    • Oregon 18 between MP 1-5
    • Oregon 138 intersection with West Diamond Lake Highway MP
    • Oregon 242, 6 miles west of Sisters MP 85-55
    • Oregon 213, 4 miles north of Mulino MP 7-8
    • Oregon 62, 5 miles west of intersection with The Dalles-California Highway MP 99
    • Oregon 126, 9 miles east of Vida MP 35
    • Oregon 422 intersection with Crater Lake MP 0-5
    • U.S. 199, 2 miles north of O'Brien MP 34-42
    • U.S. 20, 2 miles east of Shea Point MP 33-71
    • U.S. 20, 8 miles east of Tombstone SnoPark MP 71-26
    • U.S. 97, 15 miles south of intersection with East Diamond Lake Highway MP 228-249
Willamette Highway (OR 58) is open for travel between the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon.

Totally reminds me of Mt. St. Helens, even here in Silicone Valley we got ash.
Like today, a blanket of ash on the truck in Redwood City.
This was at 7am, you could see the ash falling.

This is what decades worth of forest mismanagement buys you. Same shit up here in WA! By rushing to extinguish every little lightning fire you end up with tons of fuel for these super fires which then make their own weather and can’t be contained

Do you have any good reading on this forest mismanagement subject?

Im up in Crescent City, im about 20 minutes south of the Oregon border, on the coast. Surrounded by Redwoods. Yesterday, the sky was a dark red. Today its more of a light orange. Ash has been like light snow

My dad worked for the TX Forest Service for 15 years, he's always talking about how most of the states have lousy forest management programs. They should be logging older growth, since older trees produce less oxygen, and we can make use of the wood. Then planting on both private and public lands, both fast and slow growth trees. Controlled burns are as important if not more so than the previous two. If you drive through SE Texas (or did about 10 years ago, they've probably logged out and replanted since then:D) you'll drive through forests that have been logged, replanted, and controlled burned multiple times over the last 50+ years.
