7-Pin Trailer Harness/Plug Replacement Tip

I like this option. I don't really need the 7 pin but would like to keep the option just in case. love the way this looks....should have been this way from the start.

 

Anyone ever just call a pick a part and order the whole thing? I got one for 65

 

The junk yards around here didn't have any so I went with the Honda replacement. It is the exact same except for the wiring harness. I ended up taking both plugs apart. About half way through I wished I would have just cut and spliced the wires because I was stuck but well worth it afterwards.

Need help guys!

I replaced the trailer plug receptacle with the Honda one. But my R Turn/Stop on my trailer is always on.

Tested the wires and I'm getting solid power from the Brown Wire (R Turn/Stop) when it should be blinking like the Red Wire (L Turn/Stop.)

Also tested back at the connector and I'm also getting solid power from the R Turn/Stop wire. Which tells me its not the new plug receptacle or any part of the wire from it.

Any suggestions? Is there a solenoid need to check? Replace the whole harness? Where does it route to?

 

I would start with the Flasher. If that doesn't take care of it, I would suspect a short to power.

 

The weird thing is that my blinker and brake lights work fine on my truck and it works fine on the trailer's left side. Its the right side thats getting constant power from the trailer wiring harness on my truck.

 

I think it's a short to power, but the Flasher is an easy thing to rule out. A lot easier than dining a short.

I looked back at your first post, and I want to confirm; this only happens when the trailer is plugged in? If so, have you checked for shorted bulb filaments or incorrectly inserted bulbs? Only other thing left after that is a showed wire on the trailer.

 

There's a "towing converter relay" (Magic electronic box) that combines the truck turn signals and brake lights for trailer combined turn and brake. My guess is that's where the problem is. Pull out the 30A towing fuse. If the problem goes away, most likely it's the magic box.

 

A short would mean replacing the full harness to the fuse box right?

Yes this only happens when the trailer is plugged into the truck, truck blinker and brake lights work fine too even when attached.

Also when I turn the truck off the right rear taillight on the trailer stays on too. So there is 100% power coming from the right rear brake/turn wire in the wire harness on the truck. gotta be a short in the harness then right

Trailer is LED lights and they work 100% fine on my dads f-150.

I seem to recall Toyota did have a 7 pin AND 4 pin dual connector. My 2006 TRD OR with OEM Tow package only came with the 4 pin. However, it also came with a wiring adapter for trailer brake controller. The connector is supposed to hook into the vehicles wiring from behind the glove box. That might mean the wiring main tow harness supports 7 pin as well

 

I’m 98% sure 2nd gen Tacos with a factory installed tow package never came with a 4 pin connector. If you only have a 4 pin connector, you either have a dealer installed tow package or somebody hacked the wiring on your factory tow package wiring. If you have the engine oil cooler, you have the factory tow package.

 

Just installed the Honda housing to fix my busted Toyota OEM one.

The colors of the wiring from both parts were the same, which made this a pretty easy install. Just had to take my time with prying out the Honda pins from the housing, you don’t want to damage the plastic retaining clips from the “good” housing.

 

You're right thats the hard part. I think i bent a couple retaining clips to far but after 4 months or so everything is still good. I figured if one of them starts to slip out I might use some glue or silicone to hold it in. Took me awhile to figure out there were even clips in there. Haha

 

I figure most everyone here would know this...how the hell does this come apart? I have a bad history with these plastic clips, usually ending in me snapping a critical part. Any help would be appreciated!

 

There’s 2 tabs below the arrows in this pic. Squeeze them together. Then lift the white lever thing and the connector pops right apart. This is actually a really nice connector.

honda trailer sub wire. It's still $50 + tax/shipping & not many left. I also bought a THRB & plan to do both at the same time. Diaz makes the devil toyota horns & he's the only 1 that makes this bracket still!! Can't wait to get this done - as mine is fucked from me clipping it I guess. I can think of 1 or 2 times where I may have done this. It's bent to shit & busted now! Big Thanks to OP & this thread!!!

Switched the wires from my old & into the new Honda one. Just gotta drill the bolt out now. Thats with pb blaster too.
