This poll has some interesting results.

I think @StayinStock has certain shared his fair share of historical shenanigans.

@Superdave1.0 @SRH @SweetT care to share anything with the class?

Ten years ago while on a hike I suddenly lost the hearing in my left ear... Like completely GONE! Had just gotten over a cold so though perhaps congestion had affected my ear so wasn't too worried. A couple of days later and no improvement so made an appt to see an ENT doc.

Get to the appt and its like 10 day since the onset, congestion is all gone, no cold symptoms present at all but still can't hear on the left side. Did a hearing test: 97% hearing loss!!! Dr says there's really only two causes:

Brain tumor so he orders an MRI immediately

Shingles! Apparently and mostly in middle aged men the shingles virus attacks the cranial nerve into the inner ear and causes it to swell so much that the segment that passes through the skull is affected.

MRI is clean so he tells me he'll give me a course of steroids to attempt to reduce the swelling but by that time it was almost too late for the drugs to do much of anything. Tells me to take the ten day course and come back for a hearing test to determine how much if any improvement I would get.

Next hearing test shows only about a 5% improvement.

What I'm left with is constant ringing in my left ear. Tinnitus can eat a BOD's!!!

Scariest part is there a fair amount of patients who have this reoccur on the other side and the only hearing aids that give any type of improvement are called BAHA for Bone Anchored Hearing Aid and it is anchored to your skull behind the affected ear!

Hoping to never need them :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

Ouch! That really sucks. Mine has been getting worse, so I wear ear protection constantly when doing anything that could be considered mildly loud. My dad has had constant ringing since he retired from the military.

It get's really frustrating. My wife's voice falls in that tone range where I have the most trouble hearing so she gets frustrated when she has to constantly repeat herself.
