Planning a big 30,000 mile service.

Hello everyone! So I’m planning a big 30,000 mile service coming up. Wanted to do this awhile back but got stuck in the hospital which lead to a cancer diagnosis.. not cool! But now that I’ve been through a few chemo appointments I found doing stuff to the truck helps me to get up and move and keep my mind busy!

My truck has a little over 33,000 miles on it. It’s a 16sr5 3.5 4x4. My service so far will be.. engine oil and filter change. Transmission fluid change which will include dropping the pan and also cleaning the filter/strainer and replacing the pan gasket then replacing with factory fluid. I’ll probably drain the fluid 2 times.. I ordered 8qts. Thirdly will be a diff fluid front and rear change with Amsoil

While I’m there I’m thinking about changing the transfer case fluid as well. What do you guys recommend? I was thinking about redline MT-LV because it looks like it meets the viscosity requirements etc. anyone have experience with this oil?

 

hi. i'm at 300k. you getting pretty fancy with the fluid changes with that low of mileage. personally haven't touched the transmission/diff/transfer case fluids in mine. good luck with your plans tho.

 

Wahhh!!!! It’s nice to know these new engines are still running that long despite them sounding like a sewing machine lol! Toyota reliability is still on top!

Only reason I’m going pretty hard is because I bought it used have put about 13,000 miles on it within a year and I don’t know the history of the truck. More peace of mind for me than anything!

Have you done any major repairs to your truck in all these miles? High pressure fuel pump? Injectors? Etc? Is your motor a 3.5?

 

Looks like the Redline fluid should work.

Past threads have had people lean towards using the OEM fluid or Ravenol.

You’ve never once had the fluids changed in your diffs or transmission the entire 300k miles? That’s insane lol

 

Are you paying for the service or is toyota doing it under a plan?

 

Redline is a very good oil. The Redline MT-LV will work fine. I know two people using it in their Tacoma trucks and they have never experienced any problems.

You can get genuine transfer case oil from a dealership for pretty cheap. 1 can will fill the T-case. I just did my front/rear diffs and t-case when I hit 30k a couple weeks ago. I was told by many that the oil in the transmission should be good for the life of the vehicle if you're in an AT, so I didn't touch mine.

 

Neither really! I have access to a lift and I have some experience so I’m doing it all myself.

 

Good deal! That’s what I like to hear! I’ve always heard good things about redline oils just never have used them. I’m a big mobil1 guy for my motor oils and I do like amsoil in manual trannys and diffs. Have always seen good results with them.

And thank you! That’s means a lot! Just got treatment number 4 yesterday.. so I’m officially 1/4 of the way through. Never thought I’d be going through this at 25 but life throws ya curves at times!

 

My condolences for this nasty experience. My mom went through it and came out tip top so best of luck.

And yes I have heard as well that the oil in tran is good for absurdly long time. Life of vehicle seems extreme to me but no expert here.
A project is good piece of mind regardless. But may be exercise in futility?

 

F**k cancer. Kick it's ass!
I used royal purple max gear for the diffs and royal purple synchromax for the transfer case. According to royal purple it's a suitable replacement for the transfer case fluid.

 

Thank you! And that’s awesome your mom came out on top! It’s not a fun experience but it’s needs to be done to over come the beast.

And it’s a project to keep my mind moving and keep me active that’s honestly the main reason why I’m doing it along with the peace of mind factor. Helps me feel normal like I’m working with my buddies in the garage in the evenings. So even if the transfluid doesn’t need done right now I look at it as a fun thing to do and keep me busy.

 

l’ve never changed it in any vehicle I’ve owned. I’m 65. Highest mileage was 150k. Never had a problem.

 

Thanks boss! I’m going to kick it for sure! I can breathe about 10x better than I could when I started so hopefully that means I’m beating this thing!

I’ve heard great things about the royal Purple as well! Some people swear by that stuff! I’ve never had any experience with it. But might just have to look into it!

Not to derail this thread, but what kind of cancer if you don't mind my asking? I had a touch of kidney cancer at 35. I thought that was young.

 

Nah you’re good man! I have stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma but they’re treating me as stage 4 because my chest mass was so large and the medicine is better. I’m happy to hear that you came out on top!

 

Just do a train and fill on the trans. There’s no reason to drop the pan.

I did both diffs and trans around 40k and again around 90k. Haven’t touched the transfer case. Did spark plugs around 100k.

currently around 107k miles and have had zero issues.

don’t forget to change the engine air filter and cabin air filter
