Ultimate headlight upgrade updates?

Was reading the the ultimate headlight upgrade post from some time ago. Noticed some stuff was discontinued and some updates were posted but it looks like the were in 2016. Any new updates before I start trying to tackle this mod? Thanks!

He updates the thread in the first couple of posts. All the info. should be current.

 

The thread is current. If you look in the bottom right corner of the original post you can see it was last updated in Dec 1, 2019.

 

@crashnburn80 . What are your thoughts on these KC pod type lights . Thinking about adding ditch lights ? Thanks ....... if I should post this someplace else let me know

 

For ditch lights, I like the KC Flex you have listed or Baja’s new S1. Both for compact form factor over a full size pod.

The Baja’s spec higher raw output and more power, though the KCs optics are more efficient. The Bajas are also slightly better color temp spec at 5000k vs the Flex at 5500k IIRC.

Top to bottom: 6000k, 4000k, 3000k


For ‘white’ LED light, higher color temps are cooler/more blue.

Brightness of the light source is lumens, not to be confused with raw lumens which is theoretical output. This metric isn’t that usable, because it doesn’t take into account beam pattern or the lamp optics.

Intensity of the beam is Candela, or Cd. Candela will be the contributing spec to beam distance. Higher intensity light sources (higher Cd) will project further.

Then there is Beam Distance, which tells you how far away the beam will reach at 1 lux or .25 lux (a measurement of intensity). Comparing beam distance specs, you want to make sure you are looking at the same measurement of either 1 lux or .25 lux.

All is rather not helpful for comparing the two lights though since Baja doesn’t publish any performance specs on their products unlike the other major lighting manufactures.

@crashnburn80 sorry to bother you again I went with Baja Designs Squadron -R Sport lights in driving combo was thinking about mounting them behind the grill . Any idea as where to get a mounting bracket for this kind of set up ? I did purchase Cali-Raised ditch brackets but I might get a set of S2s for those . Looking to ditch my current light set up . Thanks for your help

 

Bay Area Metal Fab makes one. I have it and plan on using it for some KC Pro6s.

For your ditch lights you might consider the new S1 instead, almost as bright as the current older S2 and smaller form factor.

 

went with OEM Sport Smoked headlights and a PIAA night tech bulbs

 

do you have the Morimoto Fogs and if so how do you like them? Any pics of their light output at night?

 

I have the KC G4's in my fogs, and if you read his reviews on aftermarket fogs. The Morimoto's weren't that great.

 

BAMF does make a sweet bracket for behind that nice open grille.

 

Oh ok, they look very close to OEM style so i may take a look at those. I didnt see the KC light sticker or tag on the front in your picture which made me think they were morimoto. Just looked at them again in the fog thread. They do look good. Thanks

 

I started with the OEM fogs, then went to Morimotos (pretty lame), then went to KC's (pretty damn good), then went to Diode Dynamics SS3 Pros (awesome).

 

Guessing you already sold the KC's? I see they are roughly $300 new
