The downside to the Platinum and all the options is you give up a lot of payload, which already sucks on the Tundra.

Sucks? how so? The tundra can out tow and out haul just about anything it's up against.

look at how Toyota does their SAE ratings versus other manufacturers. When the standards were going to change in 2010 Toyota jumped the gun but then nobody else changed them. So all of their stuff is underrated.

The Tundra is a great truck. I had a 2019 Tundra TRD Sport for 6 months, but the size was a bit much for my daily commute. It was super comfortable though, and the 5.7 with the 6 speed was a thing of beauty. It was a gas hog, but there was plenty of power on tap and it’s about as bulletproof as you can get.

What trim level are you looking at on the Tundra?

    OK, lolz.

The 2015 Ford-F-150 is now on sale, and its tow ratings are indeed certified to the J2807 standard. Ram and GM 1500-series pickup trucks were certified to SAE J2807 as soon as it was clear that Ford was going to follow through.

Can’t go wrong with the SR5. The TRD Sport that I had was listed as an SR5 with the TRD package. The seats are so comfortable on the SR5. It’s an awesome road trip vehicle. There was another Tundra SR5 that I looked at that didn’t have the TRD package that I very seriously considered. It was a cement double cab with the TRD Pro wheels and Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Everything was already blacked out and it had an aftermarket exhaust. It was a sweet looking truck.

Keep us updated with what you find and post pictures when you find the right one.

Looks like I'm going to go with a 2020 SR5 crewmax Tundra. There's a dealership willing to give me $30k for my 2017 Tacoma so I probably can't turn that down.

The F150 is rated to tow 13,200 lbs and that's with the 3.5L EcoBoost. The Tundra has the 2nd lowest tow capacity of full size pickups at 10,200 lbs. The only one lower is the Nissan Titan. Even the Titan XD is rated for lower than the F150. These are all as of 2019. The Tundra and F150 haven't changed anything since.

I would do what is best for you. Ford can't be that bad as they sell a lot of trucks and all trucks seem to have great resale value at this point. I had a Ford service truck and it performed with no problems. Don't believe every thing you hear on this site as I have the dreaded 2.7 2WD manual shift Tacoma with no resale value and hard to get rid of according to these "experts". I had it in the dealership to have the frame inspected as per the recall notice and they hounded me to trade it in - offering me a deal that would be hard to turn down but the 2.7 is not available in Canada and I really like my little truck and that is all I need. This was the first time in 5.5 years that it was back in the dealership and has performed better than I expected over the years with great MPG and adequate performance. Like many others, I have had 4WD in the past and never really used it that much and my 2WD trucks seemed to give zero problems for 12 + years.

Of course you can get it higher with special packages, wheels, and eschewing cab options and whatnot.

But tbh, if you need a real towing rig, look a t super duty/hd truck.

But yes, I agree that just because you can, doesn't mean you should. This is exactly why RAM didn't up their towing capacity when they re-did their trucks.

OP, you might also want to consider the Tundra external transmission cooler was deleted in 2019. Lots of Tundra owners 2019+ are reporting higher transmission temps. Some concerned about long term reliability are adding aftermarket coolers.

Tow ratings are usually moot on 1/2 ton trucks because most max out payload long before the get to max tow rating. That's where the Tundra falls flat.

this only happens if you load heavy on the tongue. If you balance your load you won't get anywhere close to this issue

Was kidding, of course. Keep the taco, they aren’t sought after for no reason.. #1 truck. Unless you need more space, it’s perfect.

A trailer will commonly have 10-12% of it's weight on the hitch. For a 7k trailer that equals about 770 lbs. Add 2 adults at 300 lbs and you are at 1,070 lbs. My Platinum's payload is just over 1,100 lbs.

We would just need to make sure we don't eat too much at Taco Bell to squeeze under the payload limit with nothing in the bed.

My Tacoma had more payload than my Tundra.

    Do you tow?

I was under the impression that Tundra payload was like 1600 or 1700 lb. Guess it depends on the trims.

I do actually, taco pulls trailers between four or five thousand pounds of no issues. Don't plan on trying to overload it since it is a midsize truck, but the two-wheel low mod is a godsend for the manual guys. Especially trying to reverse trailers in the garages and parking spots
