Man this reminded me of changing the gears out on my 67 Camaro with my Dad, when I was in high school. I think we actually used lipstick to see the contact marks. I was lucky to have a dad that dragged raced most his life and was a camaro fan. Had a built powerglide with a 4:88 rear end in my car. She wouldn't hit air plane speeds but I could beat anyone around town in the 1/8th mile. Dad passed away while I was in high school and just seeing this ring and pinion brought back a good memory with him. Thanks man.

The problem is consistent and has been for a few yrs with multiple trucks. It could well be incorrect machine work in the rear axle housing to allow misalignment of the carrier bearings, if every tacoma housing has this misalignment of machine work, this could be resulting in noisy rear ends, this is not a common problem in the auto world, and hasn't been for many yrs. Its rediculous this particular problem even exists now days. Toyota needs to start at ground zero with some techs and see whats wrong and fix the problem.

Sounds more like a quality control issue more than anything from what your saying.

OP, how much did Carvana give you? Good move dumping the truck at this point. Sucks for the next owner though......

not every line mechanic knows how to set up mesh with gears in a locking rear end

few have that experience ................most just bolt them up& run em

i cant see how the ' op ' has gotten 4 defective rear ends in a row

    can only be

    rear end housing misalignment

    bad pinion

    defective source

I'm on my 2nd rear diff, replaced on my 2019 TRD OR with 1,000 miles. They replaced the whole rear axle. 10,000 miles later and no issues.
