Can a Homelink be added?

I have a 2018 SR5 4/4 6cyl w/out moonroof.
My disappointment is - no homelink. Can a homelink connection be added.

 

Yes, Gentex makes a replacement homelink mirror.

 

You can also purchase a generic Homelink module out of a another vehicle (GM had them in the visors in the late 1990's - early 2000's) and mount one of those in your headliner as long as you supply power to it.

I did that on my old truck and it only cost me about $25.00 in parts. It's not as well integrated as the mirror, but it was also only 10% or so of the cost.

 

Get an OEM Homelink rear view mirror from Bob's mirrors. Sell yours on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum to help recoup costs.

I did this, reasonable cost and is OEM! Plug in installation, no wiring needed. Lights up at night too.

Is this easy to install? How do you install it?

 

Just modify one of your openers to be hidden.

1. Unplug current mirror.
2. Undo mirror retainer screw and remove
3. Plug in new mirror and place on windshield stub
4. Tighten screw
5. Program Homelink

All done!!!! As Doc Brown would say, "Amazing, isn't it?"

 

Updated my 2018 TRD Sport with Homelink mirror from www.bobsmirrors.com.
10 minute remove and reinstall. Another 10 minutes calibrate the compass and program the Homelink.
The 12 pin plug and play was just that. I went with the used mirror option. It looked brand new and had an installers sticker on it to be sure and calibrate the compass.

 

Did this for 20 bucks. Took my old 3button garage door opener, and a custom momentary switch from aironboard.com. little soldering and it will fit in the blank switch on the left cubby. Looks very OEM.

I had the compass in mine, so swapping the mirror was a single screen, unplugging the mirror, and sliding out the mirroe. Easy

So in your case, as I look at the photo, button 'S3' was the one that operated your door .... correct?

 

Will pretty much any Gentex Homelink mirror work, or are Bob's the only way to go? For example, would

ADVGEN40A4 work? I understand I might have to do some wire splicing, but that doesn't bother me a bit. Or better yet, a cheaper one like this? eBay even claims it would fit the Tacoma. Bob's are a bit more expensive than these, so if I'm capable of soldering etc, this would be more economical, right?

 

Can't you just clip your garage door opener to your visor? It'll be in the same general location as the Homelink in the mirror. If you clip it with the remote side up, it's hard to tell it's even there with the visor up. The other option is to put the garage door opener in your center console if you're worried someone may steal it if it's visible.

 

My Taco has Homelink and I've never programmed it. I tried it once right after I bought the truck and didn't like that it would work when the truck was off, meaning someone could break into my truck, hit the Homelink button and open my garage door (my Taco lives in the street in front of my house). I don't keep the standard remote in my other trucks for the same reason. Instead I use the MyQ App on my phone to open and close my garage door and to alert me when it opens or closes which, since I live alone can be useful information to have.

My funny story about Homelink in a car. A girl I used to date bought a used Lexus from a no-name car lot. The car had Homelink in the rearview mirror and it appeared to be set-up since pressing one of the buttons made it act differently than the other two buttons did. A while after she bought the car we found the previous owners address on an old registration slip in the glove compartment. They lived in the area so from then-on we joked whenever the car would have a problem that we should just take it back to where it used to live and leave it in their garage!

Moral of the story, if you do use a Homelink mirror, make sure you erase it before you trade your car in!

 

Wait, they make these!? </sarcasm> haha! Of course smarty pants, but the HomeLink visor is a more "streamlined" setup, and requires "fewer" parts. Also, depending on the answer to my next question (below), the answer to my next question below!

I thought power was only sent to the visor when the key was in the ignition?

 

The mirror on the 3rd Gen has both switched and unswitched power. I'm not sure if the 2nd Gen is the same.

 

Ahhh, that would explain it. Ok. Yea, unclear regarding second gen—maybe someone with one will chime in. Does that mean you can set it to be switched or unswitched, or are those two physically different units/options?

 

The 3rd Gen rearview mirror is powered by two separate circuits, one is always powered and the other only when ignition is on.

 

They don't all have the same harness plugs. There are many that will work, but there are also ones that won't. So Bob's isn't the only ones that work. However, Bob's are pretty cheap, guaranteed to work, and they are super helpful and friendly. I would buy from Bob's again in a second. Bob also offers a plug-n-play harness you can use that will make it so there is only keyed power so that the mirror won't work when the truck is off. You can also use this harness if you don't have a constant hot power in your harness (some 2020s don't have constant hot). The harness is only $20.
