Just bought a 2017 TRD Off Road. So far I'm loving it. One issue I'm having is that when I get it into 4xLow and adjust the terrain nob, the thing surges and the front brakes seem to be locking up, unlocking, locking up, unlocking ... well you get the the picture.

I've only tried this on pavement and soft dirt but it doesn't seem to matter. Is this normal? I wouldn't expect the brakes to engage but I'm not familiar with how the whole terrain thing is "supposed" to work.

you should not engage 4 anything on pavement or high traction surfaces...you end up binding the drivetrain which isn't great for it. That is likely what is happening if you feel/hear it sliding or skidding around when you turn.

Otherwise, if MTS is on you will hear a ABS like sound and probably feel some clicking in the brake pedal. That's MTS working and limiting the amount of wheel slip on each tire.

Are you using "crawl control" or "MTS"

What you described is txt book of "crawl control". It modulates the ABS system. Search "crawl control"

If using "MTS" and you expierience this..youve got problems.

CoTacos, thanks for the info. I had a feeling that it was something to do with being on a hard surface. I've always owned 4x4 vehicles (69 Bronco, 86 4Runner, 95 4Runner), but never one with MTS so it's a little new to me. I'd take it out this weekend to the mountains to try it out, but unfortunately all the mountains around me are on fire. I've got a trip over to the Eastern Sierras planned at the end of the month so I'll try and find a field somewhere that I can test it out on.

Like Josh said above, crawl control makes all sorts of noise too lol so don't freak out if it sounds like your braking system is going nuts...it kind of is bit on purpose lol
