New transmission cooler

Interested how you did the add on to the OEM cooler. While checking into these I read that you can either replace or add it in addition. Would like to see how you set your's up.

I drove about an hour and a half to my sons campus yesterday with a Hide-a-bed sofa in the back. Ran between 140 and 150 degrees cruising at 70mph.

Pulling the camper up to Ossipee, NH week of Aug 24 (bike week ). That’s when we’ll know if this whole project was worth it.

 

Same for me Steevo, major drop in temps pulling my 22' Camper ...

 

Camping trip in the books. Max converter temp was 203 . The pan temp was lower.
Average temp doing 60mph in 4th gear was about 170.

 

Not nearly as clean as OP, but here's my Tru Cool 4590 on a custom steel bracket. The stock cooler didn't cut the mustard in the mountains, even completely unloaded. Never seen temps go higher than 180 with the Tru Cool.

 

The weather in South Texas was tolerable over weekend with the morning lows dipping to 73. With the feeling of fall in the air I figure it was a good time to tackle one of my several pending Tacoma projects. I decided to install the Tru-Cool 4454 transmission cooler, as recommended by @gearcruncher. Even though I live in South Texas, I went with the LPD Tru-Cool because I often travel to Northern parts of NM and AZ where I've had my summer formula windshield washer fluid freeze. The process of figuring out where and how to install the new cooler was pretty easy. To me the hard part (for a 65 year old man) was crawling under the truck to top off the transmission fluid. Here's a few pictures showing the process.

OP, did you toss the OEM one or you saving it in the reusable bin?

 

Keeping it, like I do with most everything. Could become a power steering cooler or, a cooler for the engine oil. They say we have one, but I haven't found it.

 

Did you leave the trans lines hooked up to the radiator? And, which line went to the top fitting on the cooler?

Its integrated into the oil filter housing. Uses engine coolant from the thermostat housing. You can see the two rubber coolant hoses in the pic in post 11 of this thread.

 

I've seen those two hoses, didn't realize they were from the engine coolant, thought they were the in/out hoses for the oil to circulate through the filter. Will have to pay closer attention the next time I change the oil and filter for my truck.

Man this thread is inspiring me to do a bigger transmission cooler now since I tow an 18' boat several times a week. Its aluminum but, its still noticeable weight that i'm pulling. Great job OP'er.

 

How do you feel about doing a big cooler like this (in place of the stock POS), keeping the routing through the rad, but then put a thermostat in between the rad loop and the aux cooler?

 

There is a thermostat built into True cool coolers but yes , I always go through the rad first to help with fuel efficiency allowing the transmission to warm up as quickly as possible .
If you are replacing the factory after cooler you can pretty much overkill the size of the cooler that's going to be installed in its place but keep in mind , a huge after cooler can block air from your rad

The TrueCool rads are a passive thermostat simply with the low pressure drop setup. I was thinking something like a true derale inline thermostat to make sure temps come up proper to temp (160-180*f) and stay at those temps.

Will be doing some towing shortly, so decided I need to get some additional cooling. Will probably yank it out later to paint and clean it up a bit.
