    Hello All
I have a 2009 Tacoma TRD off road.

This truck never goes on pavement and doesn’t even have a license tag on it.

It is subject to extreme wetland usage for the purpose of scientific research.

Because of the maintenance problems involved I want to lock the transfer case in 4 wheel drive high range and lock the front axle in 4 wheel drive.

I have the front servo out of the truck and will block it so it cannot move.

What I need now has anyone her had the transfer case servo apart and what would be the easiest way to lock in in 4 high.

    Thanks in advance.

Easiest way is to manually move the actuator in the front diff.

More permanent and solid way to do it is to install an FJ jack shaft tube, which deletes the add but you will have to wire in the electronics.

If you want to lock it into 4hi then just turn the knob and leave it in 4hi assuming it’s an auto. Not sure what maintenance problems you are talking about but it will stay in 4hi so long as the switch is enabled.

And if you are subjecting the truck to extremes terrains I wouldn’t want it locked in 4hi, you will probably have situations where you would want it in 4Lo which also enables you to use the rear locker since you have an off road model.

Yeah what? Why though? As far as I know you won’t be saving any maintenance just removing functionality of your truck and limiting its capabilities.

My only guess is OP is having an electrical issue and just wants to manually lock it into 4hi vs fix the issue. But like I said, you’ll lose so many benefits of it being selectable and having 4Lo and the locker available.

The biggest issue is the actuators.
The problem isn’t usually STAYING in the desired range.
The problem is GETTING INTO the desired range.

Once it’s in what ever range you want, LEAVE IT.

It eliminates some electronics and allows for instantaneous switching between 2wd and 4wd as well as providing a true 2wd low. I intend to couple it with an FJ front jack shaft tube to delete the ADD system as well. Fully manual 4x4 without any electronics or actuators to fail.

    Hi all

    Thanks for the response.

We switched from Ford F150 to the Tacoma starting with the 2008 model now have 5 of them.

The problems with the ones that don’t have license tags on them are the continuous operation in soft mud and high water.

Being soft mud does away with the need for 4L but high water also causes water contamination in the servos.

At this time the unit in question has water in the front axle servo this I will put a hose clamp on the shaft between the fork and the housing that will lock the front axle in gear.

The gear box servo is not working and I want to lock it in 4H.

I did this with the Fords and it worked well but they are now down to the last one the rest have suffered from mistreatment by researcher that have no idea how to operate in this type of terrain. We need to take a tractor out to pull them out of the mud often.

So now that the servos are not working what I want to know is there anyone here that has had the gearbox servo open that can tell me how to manually put the gear box in 4H?

They operate on a 16 square mile parcel that is used for animal and flora research.

    Hi

    Here is the latest.

The front axle is locked in using a small hose clamp on the shifter shaft between the fork and the housing after installation of the servo the front axle is now locked all the time.

I then removed the 3 screws that hold the black cover on the transfer case servo and rotating the large gear by hand until it is in the next detent. Put the black cover back on and this locks the transfer case in 4X4 high.

I remove the fuse, placard the 4X4 switch out of service and plugged all of the wiring back in the proper locations in order to keep the mud out so the truck can be restored to original configuration with as little work as possible.

Yesterday late after noon had to send tractor 5 miles out in the bush to pull the truck out of the mud.

Having 4X4 only lets them get further in to the swamp before getting stuck LOL

Both servos had quit working and the truck is armor plated with that big front bumper and a long ¼ inch thick skid plate that goes all the way back to the back of the transfer case.

Next time in the shop I will try to remember to get some pictures.

    Oh damn.
Maybe something like this might keep them from getting stuck. It just might make then say, "Challenge accepted" though. Lol

sounds like you may need to give the driver the gets stuck the most often a recovery strap and a come along.....

few times doing that they might get better at not getting stuck
