Stone shedding needs , biproduct of wanting /needing AT tires , Maybe you all already do this but ?

I grew tired of driving on gravel roads and filling my tires with stones , then having constant thoughts of sharp stones digging into the tires until a leak was created. Listening to the Tic tic tic ping was annoying to say the least and still seeing many stones in the treads on my tires . It was an indication of stones being ejected but never all of them .
Picking out stones via screw diver is an option and works but is a full time job.
Here is what I have found to be the easy way to shed those stones .

In my region of Merica , there are rumble strips formed into the highways on the edges of the driving and semi passing uphill passing lanes . Driving on one side of the lane on the rumble strip , though loud , ejects the stones from the tires on that side !!! , Find a lane that has it on both sides and it will shed most if all stones from the tires in less than 15 seconds on each side .
Note , I only do this if I have no one behind me !
Also , yes I figure that this will chip the rockers and create a place for rust , but driving on roads such as I do will do the same anyway .

 

I would dig stones out when rolling tires between axles during a rotation. Usually worst on car tires.

This is my first set of ATs and wow. The stones don't load up, and the few that do, eject a low speeds.

Neat advice though. Nothing worse than hearing a stone clacking on a nice day.

 

Different tires fix that. Coopers were bad for that. Michelins like I have now don't hold rocks at all.

 

Drive it like you stole it and them bitches always come out !

 

My first choice was Michelin , but they did not have a 265 70 16 E tire that I wanted . Time will tell .

 

AT3s? I've been planning on going with stock size Cooper Discoverer AT3LTs when these Goodyears are smoked. I ran 35x12.50 STT Pros on a previous rig and they didn't hold gravel whatsoever compared to the Duratracs before them but the taco's demands are such that it will never see STT Pros no matter how much I loved them.

OP: the rumble strip bit is a damn good idea! I think I'll be on gravel again this weekend wandering around with my son, I'll have to try it out. He's amused by the strips almost as much as the white rumble lines or bump-bumps, as he calls them

Tagging on to OPs protip, there's one for those of you with a kid in the backseat and no one in the front. Pop the headrest out and they can see as well as if they were in the front like we all got to enjoy in days gone by.

 

Good pic! Yea, at3's. That is the only downside for those tires. Take a good look at the grooves and you will see an almost barbed design in the tread. They hold stones.

 

Damn. Back to the drawing board.
