So the wife has a new camper that she wants to attempt to “boondock” in. Currently we’re in Cedar City, UT but have a KOA spot reserved in Moab for tomorrow. I’d prefer to make this happen around Moab since I know there’s a ton of good spots out there. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can get a camper that’s made to get off the asphalt that’s nothing crazy?

I prefer tent camping but this is the only way I can get her out that doesn’t include a hotel. The original plan was Gemini Bridges but that was before we bought this thing. I’d love to get her in a spot that has an amazing night sky view.

Willow Springs is going to be your easiest bet, but most of the accessible sites are going to be slammed the next few days.

I was just looking at Willow Springs on another site I googled.

What can you tell me about Klondike Bluff Road?

I’d like to stay fairly close to Arches.

Fewer, smaller sites and more mountain bike traffic, but still very do-able. Will be a bit bumpier getting back there

You think people will clear out of Willow Springs on Tuesday?

Not sure: it'll definitely be less hectic than tonight, but I'm not sure how many people are turning it into a longer vacation. Covid has changed a lot of our usual tourism patterns.

@MuddySquirrel what’s the trail difficulty for Gemini Bridges? Was thinking about taking the wife up it if it’s “easy“ like I just read. She’s scared of heights and I don’t wanna freak her out. She’s never been off roading before.

Pretty chill: it's been a few years but my recollection is some loose sand and a baby ledge are the worst obstacles. My one worry would be the exposed cliff-side bit on the tail of the downhill leg: it's short but it's a decent drop off the passenger side if you're going downhill and afraid of heights.

Shafer's another (longer) mellow route, but same issue with the switchbacks up to I-Sky. Nether trail is difficult or will put you significantly off camber.

    Here's a random video of Gemini, https://youtu.be/eFRDupQ3VNY
The part I was talking about is in that 6-8 minute timeframe. They're running it from the bottom which might be the more comfortable direction for her.

Welp, weather turned to shit. Drove in from Cedar City on Monday. Nearly ran out of gas but limped into the Loves. You guys seriously need more gas stations on 70. Did the touristy stuff after I got our camper set up, walked the town and had a really good dinner at Zax. The fires had it so hazy that we skipped camping on BLM land. Tuesday we went in Arches, walked part of one trail then left. The wind was crazy.

We plan on making another trip in future. It’ll probably be Moab, Arches & Canyonlands without the SW Utah piece.

No picture of me nearly running out of gas. I was too concerned with finding a gas station to take a picture. I will say this though, I have never seen my dash say “please refuel” before. Normally it just shows miles to empty but because I was dragging a trailer it couldn’t accurately calculate miles.

The Zax Burger was really good.

You can see how hazy it was from the fires.
