So I’m switching to Mobil 1 synthetic soon from semi synthetic and my questions are ..

After I switch should I change the oil filter a few times within a certain number of miles because the synthetic will be ‘cleaning’ any sludge I do have out (the truck has had regular oil changes as filter changed every 5k with Toyota oil & filter)

should I drain the synthetic after initially changing (within a certain number of miles) to get the “mixed” oil residue out of the motor ?

if so what are your recommendations ? Oil guys speak up here , if your here to heckle me go do it in another thread

4.0 motor , 123k on it , no leaks and doesn’t burn or use oil currently . Consistent oil and filter changes with Toyota oil and stock filter . FWIW

Switch and just continue with your regular OCI. You'll be just fine.

Sounds like it’s no big deal ? I would of thought there was a “procedure” to switching

You are over thinking, these engines last forever on any oil, just stick to regular intervals.

If you switch to synthetic, just do it and run longer intervals so you're not wasting any money. I'd do 6000 miles to 8000 miles on synthetic on a 4.0

I ran Gunk 5 minute flush through mine then let it drain overnight. Changing the filter again in a week or so would be a good idea. Edit: and I added this for shits and giggles. 389175CA-18B8-4119-85E7-D8A379C4362A.png I can see the eyes rolling

This. I typically give myself a Window between 5000 to 7000 mile OCI when using synthetic and the factory Denso Filter. This gives me time to get the tires rotated and pick a Well timed weekend or squeak out another month to get to More favorable weather if possible.

I have gone 10k+ Miles with synthetic and a premium Filter (Fram Ultra) when I was burning a lot of highway miles.

Just swap it the next time and don’t think twice.

I’m putting a fumoto valve on the truck for easier changing (as I live in a apartment now) so I was possibly considering sending a few samples to black stone to get a good idea how long I will be able to go exactly

My real question is have you changed the rear diff oil? Edit: and I’ve had the Fumoto valve on the truck for going on 11 years, now

Sounds like your truck has had regular oil changes throughout its life, so I doubt you have any "sludge" to deal with. Switch to your hearts content, and no matter what they say you can switch back and fourth at will. Nothing bad will happen. First thing I did when I bought my truck is change the oil to synthetic. I still change mine at 5K; it might be a waste of money to some, but my truck, my money.

Its a good idea, they will likely to tell you to run 10k oil change intervals.

Yea I’ve been noticing the current oil has been getting dirtier when it’s due . Seems like MAYBEE this might be where the sludge starts ? It used to come out pretty clean

Nah, oil color has really no bearing on remaining life, some say it does, but in reality, no (unless it's as dark as pure crude). It's what it is supposed to do, hold the contaminates in suspension. Different oils with different additive packs will do different stuff. My oil in my truck will get darker within 1500-2000 miles depending on the brand I use, and it's pretty clean inside. You should see how quick the oil in my VW GTI with the direct injected turbo gets dark.

Yea I would think M1 is really good for it , 10k mile changes . I don’t really do heavy driving either , it does have to withstand temp changes thou it’s 90+ here in the summer and anywhere in the freezing temps in the winter
