No personal experience but I've heard that Cooper ST Maxx, studded, (most people don't stud them) are really good in deep snow

totally agree with you but nobody said any of those tires "do great" on snow & ice.

Studs on automobiles are illegal in my state, but I have been using them on my bicycles for many years. Studs do very little in deep snow. They are for ice and hard packed snow.

I agree that can be said for most tires. The slower in snow and ice you go the better, always. Winter tires bring you back some of that dry road performance we’re all used to for 6mo of the year.

Studded Maxxs would be an epic all-around winter tire.....if we could have studs here in MN haha

The snow up in Marquette is that perfect fluffy lake effect stuff. I don’t think studs are necessary there even if they’re legal.

#37 said , CHAINS! I used them with ice bars. Had a cabin in Pine Stump. Fished Perch lake all winter. Takes practice. By the way my truck was a 2 wheel drive. Remember "knobby" snow tires? What do the locals use?

I bet a set of 33x10.50R17 Kenda Klever R/T studded would get around in the snow pretty good.
Chains for the crazy deep stuff.

What do you think about a 245/75/17 on stock suspension? Thinking of just biting the bullet and get a 2" or 3" lift. 3" would probably go 255/80/17 if it won't rub.

Pretty positive you can fit 255’s stock, someone will correct me though

Do you know how much space there is in the back? Enough to fit chains?

There’s a ton of room back there since there’s no control arms to worry about. I’d say yeah chains would be fine but have never run them myself.

I was more worried about tearing a fender/liner/flare up.

I would think you're ok but anything goes at full-stuff until somebody can confirm it

She will get over it, I bought a snowmobile last year and heard some bitching about it but the sled is definitely worth it. Just offer to take her for a ride, she will say no and your good to go.
As far as tires go I live in one of the snowiest places in the country (Tug Hill)and you'll see all the plow guys go with really small skinny tires . They dig down to the pavement instead of floating like big balloons.

Ok I think I've decided on 255/70/R17 Toyo AT3's. We do a lot of back road driving and checking places out. I like looking for those deep woods grouse spots so I figured this would be a nice in-between snow's and MT's. Now the big question is if I get a 3" lift next year will it look like I missed leg day?

    I've run 265/70R17 Toyo RT this year, and while my buddies do use them for deep snow;

I'm more concerned about stopping and turning in slush/ice/cold during the other 99% of my driving.. I've had my 255/70R17 Blizzaks in up to about a foot of fresh snow for the past 9 seasons with no problem at all, also have shovels and maxtrax at the ready.. This year I'm moving to DM-V2s - we'll see how this winter goes.

The more I think about it the more I flip flop on what to do. Now I'm considering biting the bullet and getting a dedicated winter and then a summer tire. Found the Bronze TRD Wheels that look awesome so maybe two sets is the way to go.

Changing the ride height of the front suspension will not allow you to fit larger tires unless you intend to never drive over a bump. In any case, many have reported fitting 255/85r16 without any modifications. Note that 3rd gens have about 3” of down travel from the factory. A 3” lift would leave you with zero which would cause you to essentially fall into every dip in the road.
