I am planing an upgrade on my entire sound system in my 2012 Tacoma and I was planning on putting 6x9 components in the front doors, 6.5 coax in the rear doors and subs behind the back seats. My dilemma is that I’m pretty new to all of this and don’t really know how to pick good speakers, subs, head units, etc. so I would love some advice as to what to put in to take my truck to the next level. Btw, I’m running a completely stock system now.

I'm running oem headunit and added a line out converter to add a sub to help the horrible oem speakers lows. It works but if your looking for more than just some bass, upgrade the headunit first. The factory headunit is very underpowered.

Totally, a simple headunit is often all most people need. A good pioneer or alpine can give a lot more oomph from factory speakers.

I'm looking into this also. I have decided to use Pioneer speakers (TS-A692C up front, TS-652F in back) coupled to a Kenwood HU (DNX576S).

I have removed the door panels to check the existing speakers. They are the OEM 6x9 with tweeter in front and a 6.5 in rear with a stock 6CD HU. To me the sound is fairly dead and the max volume is short.

I'm sure the Kenwood has plenty of push to drive the volume to my pleasure. I just not sure if the speakers will battle each other in frequencies.

I am not a big audiophile nor do I have the desire to run an amp or subwoofer. I like to keep the truck appearance tight and tidy.

    Search around on Crutchfield.

I always advise people looking to upgrade their sound system should first install sound deadening in their trucks. That alone will make the OEM and much nicer aftermarket speakers sound better than without adding it. The cab of our trucks isn't the quietest environment...

What’s your budget? All the advice here so far is solid - especially the sound deadening - best thing I did. I replaced everything and can say that while a HU upgrade will help the stock speakers, they are still inferior in every way to good after markets. Your budget will drive a solid upgrade versus skill crushing....
