I passed on the extended warranty, but after reading this forum wondering if I should have. I've always read to get an aftermarket warranty cause they're cheaper. What's your experience?

The factory warranty is the cheapest.

I got an extended one through my Credit Union, cause I bought my ‘16 used and it was past the factory warrantied point. I got 5 years and up to 125k on the odo bumper to bumper. Was pretty cheap at $1100 i thought. Factory wasn’t a choice for me though.

In your opinion. I think all the add on lifts, accessories, upgrades, etc are a waste of $. Everything is subjective to the person that wants it. Auto and home owners insurance is a waste of money. But if you use it I guess it wasn't.

I'm a huge fan of the factory extended warranty.

$900 for 5yr/100k Toyota Platinum bumper to bumper warranty was most certainly worth it. That one payment will be covered if just about anything needs to be repaired. On modern trucks, electronics failures add up quick. The dealer in my area also provides a lifetime powertrain warranty at no cost on new vehicles.

Just curious, where's your truck at now mileage wise, and have you used the warranty yet?

Asking because my credit union pushes those things HARD, every couple of weeks I get a mailer.....and that type of shit is always sketchy. Nothing worth doing will hound you until you do it.

'Cept taking a dump I guess lol

Just about to tick 50k (about 18k miles in 10 months)and i have but only on non-serious things. Weather strips, windshield glass that was poorly installed, as well as the sticky Tach deal being fixed. I’d rather be safe than sorry though as it only added a couple bucks per month on my payment.

It's simply a numbers game. I am a typical owner and keep my vehicles on average 3-6 years. I have bought around 30 new vehicles in 41 years of driving. Sounds like a lot but I am counting vehicles for my wife and children too. We've never bought an extended warranty, so at roughly $1,000 x 30 is $30K saved. In that time we have spent around $6K on a clutch, radio and transmission. So we saved $24K.
This strategy, combined with switching to only Toyota, Honda and Subaru has worked.
Now, I still buy road hazard for my wife's tires. She hits every hole and sharp object in front of her.
So it's strictly a numbers game.

That's well put, and I agree. I'm right about where you probably were at the half way point as far as # of new vehicles and feel like I'm WAY ahead dollar wise.

I used to cheap out on road hazard for tires but the ball and chain convinced me on my current set. Sure enough 500 miles in i got a nail in the sidewall.

There's an article somewhere that said something like only 10% of extended warranty buyers actually use it. IMO it's a waste of money especially on a brand like toyota. If I was buying a Merc, BMW, Land Rover, etc. new I would likely buy the extended warranty and ditch the car once it ran out.

Remember that TW is the furthest place from a representative sample. We are enthusiasts who are tinkering with our trucks, take them to places toyota never meant them to go, and are hyper sensitive to "issues." With how many tacomas toyota sells around the world TW is probably like a 1% sample of the total owners and the ones that have catastrophic issues are like 1% of said 1%.

I have the Toyota extended warranty. It’s a waste. unless you NEVER leave pavement, they will not warranty anything.
