If you could do it over again, would you still have lifted your truck?

Comparing the benefit and cost of lifting the truck or just trying to a stock truck to fit 33’s.

wondering if any of you regret going with a lift over just adding a more aggressive wheel and tire combo.

I really don’t need the capability of a lift, but I like the look (obviously). However I’ve seen a few stock trucks on 265/75/16’s and 265/70/17’s with a more aggressive tread and aftermarket wheels and they look pretty darn good.

So can anyone weigh in?

 

I am completely happy with my mild lift (Bilstein 5100s with OME-885 springs) that I installed myself and running aggressive 265/75r16 tires. I wish I didn't wait 2 years and did it right when I bought it new.

 

Mine isn’t lifted, but I personally wouldn’t do it. It throws everything off. Consider this... What do all the 500k - 1 million mile Tacos and Tundras have in common?


They are almost always in their factory configuration.

 

I can already feel how the overwhelming masses are going to reply to this one.

As much as I like the looks of a lift, it is functionally useless for my needs. I can count exactly how many times the ground has kissed my truck: once. One time. And it was because I forgot to take my hitch out of the receiver before hitting the trail.


As cool as it looks, I have better places to waste my money right now.

 

nope. went through all that noise with my trd or and my t4r premium. was a complete waste of money to me. all the extra weight makes these trucks slow af. my sport is stock height and nimble as heck; just exactly what i was going for. i MIGHT upgrade my suspension, but keep it the same height. if so, thatll be the very last mod i do, coming after supercharging. the hitachis is doing a fantastic job as is.

 

I did a small lift with 6112's and 5160's and the difference in ride quality on the road is huge. Would do again. You don't have to lift a full 3".

 

Only thing I would consider is the Fox suspension off the Pro.

 

I won’t knock a lift. They look great, and for certain off-road is necessary. But, like the Op, I question whether it leads me down a rabbit hole of issues that outweigh the benefits for me.

 

Which is exactly why I say avoid. Most of us bought these trucks for their reliability. Screwing around with the trucks suspension is a sure way to flush that reliability right down the toilet.

 

what amount of lift did this set up give you? I’m looking into getting at least a 2.5” lift

 

I came here to say this. I definitely like the look of some of these lifts and builds, but it just isn't practical for my everyday driver.

 

I haven't a use for a lift either nor would i ever do one...have spoke with others with 3''-6'' that had some regrets after having some issues. I guess if you need to thats anther story, but imo, i don't think toyota designed these trucks as well as our domestics to be lifted. I ran my tundra for nearly 300k miles without a lift, and without any chassis or drivetrain issues either.

 

they are also driven 400+ miles a week which i think has more to do with the mileage mark than suspension components

 

I'd do it all over again, without a doubt. If you have to ask a forum this question, lifting probably isn't for you.

 

Would you guys think the more mild the lift the less issues? I am thinking of just doing a 5100 only front to just level out the rake,,,,and for me its simple vanity that it looks better to me without the rake....but if you think that risks issues down the road,,then I would rethink my priorities

 

The only reason why you're gonna run into issue quicker with a lift is if you're lifting a lot with weird angles...putting extra stress on the suspension parts. Or, if you lift and actually drive your truck offroad harder (putting your new suspension to use) wearing parts out quicker.

 

1st pic is my 2nd gen with a 6" lift. I'd never do that again. Waste of money and the ride was terrible. The second pic is my 3rd Gen with Bilstein 5100s all around and the Toytech add-a-leaf in the rear. Way less expensive and the ride is actually better then the stock suspension. All I changed are the shocks...everything else is OEM. It only raised the truck about 1.5" but that should be enough to do 275's without having to change anything else. I'd absolutely do it again. It is just making is closer to what you would get in the Pro model anyway.

 

Mild lift yes. Bracket lift nah. My last tacoma had almost 400k on it when I sold it and spent half of that with a full OME kit, so in my opinion it didn't affect reliability at all. The only thing it did change for me was front brake servicing. Wound up putting tundra brakes on it and never had another issue. If you like it have at it, are these trucks plenty capable factory though absolutely. Ive owned 22 different toyotas and everyone of them was lifted in some way shape or form lol.

 

yep! love the lifted look. I've lifted every truck I've owned, never any weird issues, not once.

 

For me, I think when time comes I will upgrade the Bilstein shocks, add some bump stops from Timbren and some aggressive tires most likely Toyo Open Country AT 2 or 3 and for me that would do. I'm after a long and reliable ownership. But I enjoy seeing lifted Tacoma's!
