I can just imagine the posts on here if we get a diesel. “Where does the exhaust fluid go? Why does my engine sound like a sewing machine? And after a year or so the “how much would it cost to convert to gas?” post.:anonymous:

Toyota will do hybrid before diesel. Toyota has no interest in North American diesels. Our standards are too high and demand is too low.

The Duramax is pretty popular in the Colorado/Canyon. The problem is it originated in Thailand and had to be overhauled to meet EPA standards. From my understanding, the DEF system is the only thing that was unreliable about those engines. Toyota would have to fight the same battle.

Can still have Manual Transmissions with electric cars, no need todo away with the fun.

It wouldn't be a total surprise to see the 2021 Frontier return with a Manual Transmission option, on the 2020 it would not have made sense with the next Generation engine as they would have had to do extra crash tests and certifications on what would be a low sales volume year.

approx 15 years ago it was almost a maybe

neat iteration that had promise save for emissions

few remember the AUDI A-10 race car that did very well

at the time 65% sales in Europe diesel

the BMW 740 offered in gas & diesel.....................the diesel stepped all over the gas in testing

for a 4WD it would have been great

for a mall / hooters/ blvd cruz.......... Not so much

died completely after the cheater program at Volkswagen

No, and good riddance. Diesel engines put a lot more particulates into the air, and study after study shows things like impaired lung development and capacity (to day nothing of things like cancer) for children and adults in smoggy areas with high counts of fine particulates. If you live somewhere with real smog you likely know what it’s like to go outside and have your lungs seize up as if you were an asthmatic.

You might not come back once you realize it has more power, better driveability and still gets better fuel economy.

It's the DEF system that becomes the issue. Hands down more torque and better MPG. But they have far too many emissions for the EPAs liking.

This is true for the older, pre-emissions Diesels but the newer ones (say anything in the light-medium duty range built in the past 8 years or so) tend to run pretty clean. My DD is a '17 F-550 with the 6.7L Diesel. This one is my third Super Duty since '06 and it doesn't smoke or give that stale fuel smell after idling for hours on a cold night. Ten years ago it was common for me to come-home smelling like Diesel exhaust from working near my truck all day but not anymore. The 6.0 (an engine International built for Ford) was the worst, constantly clogging the EGR valve (which I eventually bypassed) and blowing black soot all over the car I used to park next to at home. The 6.7 I have now never blows black soot and it's much quieter too! My neighbors particularly like that part since it's not uncommon for me to come and go from my house at odd hours of the night and my truck lives next to a block wall so a loud engine would raise some eyebrows.

Mine's pretty thrifty with the DEF (I have my oil changed every 250 Hours and a tank of DEF will generally last until my next oil change) however repairs look to be pretty hard for a DIY (or at least this DIYer). Oil and filter changes, fuel filter changes, air filter changes, draining the fuel-water separator are all pretty easy however anything beyond that looks to be really hard. Serpentine belt replacement? Accessing all of the radiator hoses? Two water pumps (the EGR system has it's own cooling system), turbo changes? Good luck! Thankfully mine hasn't needed anything more than regular maintence in the past 70K Miles. We turn them in at 100K miles (and many thousands of idle hours) so I can't speak to what goes wrong with them much after that.

Now all bets are off for the newer Diesel's people modify to 'Roll Coal' as it's called and blow black smoke everywhere. Since my state started requiring emissions testing on Diesel's I thankfully don't see as many of those as I used to.

As far as wanting a Diesel in a Taco goes, no thanks not for me anyways. My F-550 which weighs ~16K LBS a Diesel is great but for the way I drive and haul with my Taco a gas engine is much better and easier to work-on.

I think Toyota should offer a gas Tacoma that pipes the sound of a diesel into the cab through the stereo. That would get them 50% of the way there. It should also come with tow mirrors and clearance lights.

I came to the Tacoma from a diesel Jeep Liberty that was before all the DEF and participate filters. Seeing all the costs and service those components tend to have I decided to leave diesel for the next vehicle. I think if bio diesel from waste oil and other non food competitive crops would have taken hold and emissions in the US were not as high we would see much more movement to diesel. But the government supported corn and ethenol over other bio fuels and then we had the VW TDI thing that soured consumers to the fuel just like the 80s GM V8 that didn't fair well and put a bad mark on small diesel vehicles.
Nissan was testing a Cummins 4cylinder in the Frontier. I think that got dropped too. You will not see much more in our market.

I’d be very surprised if the Taco got a diesel in the US. Anyone who’s actually owned one knows the exhaust systems are a PITA to maintain.

With that said, I think the new ducted fuel injector system Sandia labs came up with looks very promising for all diesel motor systems around the world.

    https://www.sandia.gov/news/publications/labnews/articles/2019/08-30/ducted_fuel_injection.html

The thing is, if you could eliminate NOX and soot via an improved diesel combustion process like this one, you wouldn’t need DEF and EGR systems anymore. Maybe Toyota will use this technology on the Hilux?

I wish Toyota would release a diesel so that people would stop asking for it and realize that they are no better off with a diesel than they are with a gas engine. For the love of god, why the fuck do people think that a diesel is the savior. Don't you think that if a diesel was better that Toyota would offer that exclusively? Don't you see that other manufacturers try and fail miserably to make a quality diesel product? Hell, take a look at what VW had to resort to in order to bring a diesel to market. It is simple, by the time you make a diesel that meets the same standards as a gasoline engine, you end up with the same power. Why don't people realize that diesel and gasoline are refined from the exact same crude oil. Do you really think that there is a power fairy that waives her wand over every batch of diesel and infuses the product with 20% more stored energy?
