Recovery points

A little help here ....Ok so I ordered the hitch recovery insert with the D shackle for the rear. What do I use for the front recovery point.

 

The OR and Pro have a recovery hook on the passenger side.

EDIT: I also have a hitch with a shackle for the rear.

Understand that it isn't the ARB $250 super-engineered and rated Recovery point.. this is more like the factory bracket made big enough to mount a shackle.

 

Also.....I thinking of picking these up. Thoughts?

Just make sure you know what equipment you're gonna buy and how to use it.

Static rope/tow strap- towing NOT snatching. Does not elongate.

Dynamic rope/strap- will elongate (stretch) so help recover a vehicle. Once unstuck, if you need to tow, change over to a static.

Edit: for your info, that is NOT a dynamic strap. DO NOT SNATCH WITH IT

with a snatch strap it has a short life from what i have read (under 5 to 10 pulls) look it up

I’ll be the first to say I know very little about recovery and I’m just learning. I’ve never been stuck anywhere before and that’s basically because I’ve never taken my previous car (Santa Fe) anywhere I could get stuck.

I’d like to eventually get out there with fellow Tacoma owners and see what my truck can do.

I’m old enough and I wise not do anything outside of my abilities and I’ll always be with people who know what they are doing. I’d just like to have my own recovery gear.

 

Recovery boards work good too!!! Saved my friend hahaha!!! I only used it once but I was glad I got them.

Also worth having some soft shackles to loop through the rear hitch ring and the recovery rig.

 

Thanks to everyone here. I am just learning this stuff, too. I am in the camp of don't get yourself into places you can't get out of so I have never needed a recovery point. But then again, in the North East, for the most part, where I would go off road, we are not talking about anything to treacherous. Even in Northern Quebec the roads / trails are rough but not like anything the folks out West have to deal with.

Question for everyone. Is there a more reasonably priced recovery point than the ARB one? I get it -- you get what you pay for -- and I may go down that route when I get to that phase of my truck mods (I take it slow) but was just curious if that was the only real option or if there was something that would work well that cost less. I am open and looking for any and all ideas.

Appreciate the discussion ... it helps folks like me who just don't have the knowledge or the depth of experience.

Your TRD should already have a beefy hook on the passenger front side that you can loop a strap over. This will work just fine.

 

Very interesting. Thank you! From everything I have read, they say the tow hooks are not recovery points. But the description of that part says Tow Hooks / Recovery. So I assume it will work for me. That could be an easy solution ... and being all thumbs I should even be able to install it.

 

ARB recovery point for the front

 

You will find varying opinions I’m sure. This should be the hook that comes on an off road version. It is plenty for 90% of recoveries in my opinion.

 

Thanks. I may even have on on my TRD OR 2020 already. I will climb under there and look. Agree, there are extreme situations but the kinds of places I might need this that should be more than fine since my understanding is that it attaches to the frame.

Silly question for you, if you don't mind, if you have that hook why do you need the shackle things everyone keeps painting and putting on their trucks? Not criticizing mind you but I don't understand why you would have those if you have a tow / recover hook mounted to your frame, like the part you sent a link to?

 

I personally don’t have the steel d-rings, although they can look cool on the right set up-lol.
I keep soft shackles around and mainly it would be for the rear, it is a lot easier than feeding the recovery strap through the d-ring. The soft shackle also cinches some so it could be helpful when your recovering from a tough angle and can’t get the loop from the strap to stay on the front hook.
Mainly it just makes it easier, but isn’t a requirement by any means.
