IIRC, you and hiPSI are ME's, correct? What do you guys think of this new ducted fuel injector system Sandia came up with? See links below

    https://www.sandia.gov/news/publications/labnews/articles/2019/08-30/ducted_fuel_injection.html

    https://www.machinedesign.com/mecha...ucted-fuel-injection-cleans-up-diesel-engines

Full disclaimer - I do not think Toyota will bring a diesel to the Taco. It'll be cool to see what this does for diesel motors around the world.

Never gonna happen partner. Forget you ever knew about Toyota and diesel, or import an older one. Or just swap in a Kubota v2203, that’s the closest you can get being made in Japan and readily available here.

I think it sounds stellar. Anything that simplifies, increases output, and runs cleaner is great in my mind.

The big deal is getting it on the line. So far, Nissan's variable CR is limited, GM and Honda had issues with their cylinder deactivation, and obviously, Toyota completely hosed the 3rd Gen tune. I think the only standout is Mazda's Skyactiv on the normally aspirated small displacement, big punch engines? Sure, gas and diesel output, in general, is really good these days. The Sandia and Mazda stuff could extend the useful life of ICE.

The biggest difference is in efficiency when used in smaller/lighter vehicles. I had a 2006 Jetta with the 2.0 turbo and a 2011 Jetta with the 2.0 TDI and the diesel was way better on fuel. The '06 averaged 29.8mpg and maxed out at 34.6mpg. The '11 averaged 43.2mpg and maxed out at 59mpg.

It's brilliant in its simplicity. There are some smart dudes at DARPA and Sandia. How long it takes to get to market is another matter. I'm sure testing has begun and, depending on results, the fine tuning will begin. Once that phase is complete, prototypes will be built and ran both in lab and real world. Once that happens, production will begin, most likely on retrofitting existing large engines. Think 70L and above. My gut feel is 7-10 years before widespread automotive use. These processes take time. ;)

I think newer tech could extend the life of diesel but it has to be reliable. Toyota how they operate is not going to sell it to consumers until it's proven that. I see that's clearly how they operate with other technology.
No ICE by 2030 in Cali we will see if they can meet that.... In general renewable energy and electric vehicles can't full all our needs just yet. That mandate could make living in the state very expressive. Current technology doesn't out put enough.

I wouldn’t even want them to - even my work truck (Hino 258) made in the Hino plant In Japan only gives us issues when the DEF system is acting up.

    It’s ridiculous

I can tell you out of the new and old diesels I’ve owned none of those make make me want to stay with a diesel. Emissions on new diesels and high maintenance costs on older diesels negates it all.

Wonder how they are planning on replacing all the tax revenue that comes in from fuel taxes.

It's only new sales. In 15yrs, I would think that most folks would be looking for EVs in the light duty and short haul medium duty markets. It will be at least a decade after that for a significant change in fuel usage.

Now, the whole tax replacement thing is problematic. WA is experimenting with some real BS solutions and rosey pictured plans.

no one has found anything definitvely wrong with the ' Diesel ' engines

    that were sold by VW/Audi

    there was a ' Cheater ' software program...........................................since rectified

( not the first or only to cheat the EPA on emmisions testing )

those vehicles bought back from customers ..................... FEW complaints

many less than a year old....................LOW mileage & in EXcellent Condition

    have been REprogrammed

    are subsequently being REsold

i know of 2 directly & owners are Satisfied !!! with the everyday driving & performance

Yeah, and that efficiency is gained at the expense of pollution. When you add all the necessary emissions controls that has to be added, you are no better off. It is a wash unless you cheat the numbers like VW did to make it look like you are getting better economy. You could go back to leaded gasoline with no cats or the other restrictions and you could get the same mileage. Stored energy is stored energy. Diesel and gasoline come from the same tap. You refine it in the factory or you refine it through a series of controls in your vehicle.

A friend of mine was all geeked up to get his diesel Canyon. 3 months later his operation costs are no better than mine. His mileage with all the emissions crap puts it very close to my gasser.
