Bought 2017 certified preowned trd 4x4 Tacoma. Had lift kit on truck. Had factory warranty up to 100,000 miles. They convinced us to add Cost guard wrap warranty, said would cover everything base warranty didn’t. 14 months later, upper control arms are bad. Telling us will be 2500 to fix because they will have to put new lift kit on because one on it was put on when truck was new, was high end aftermarket. Question is...... were we misled with extra warranty coverage, and being certified pre owned why would they not say anything about lift not being covered under extra warranty. Dealer told us kit was special ordered when purchased from factory.

    Never buy additional warranties.

At least, I never do. For this exact reason

    Welcome to TW.

I've never heard of a warranty covering a lift kit before.

Any warranty that isn't the factory 36k only has two interests in mind:

    A) collecting your money
    B) not giving up your money.

Best of luck. If I were you I'd try cancelling the warranty for a prorate.

Dealers not honoring extended warranties is nothing new. 2500 for control arms seems excessive to me.

IMO extended warranty's are all a scam. But I can see them not wanting to cover aftermarket parts. You might want to pick your fight with the lift kit manufacturer.

I bought a used 2014 F150 in 2016. Since it was CPO I an extended warranty was included. At 85,000 miles the waterpump goes bad. It's covered they said. But with a $100 deductible... for a $69 part. I would have normally taken it to my regular independent mechanic, but he was out of town and it would be about 2 weeks before he could get to it.

It only made sense to replace the serpentine belt and radiator hoses while replacing the water pump. But those parts were not under warranty and neither was the labor to replace them. If I'd let them put the old hoses and belt back on the bill would have been $100 for the deductible. The total bill ended up being over $400. Under warranty.

The warranty is a performance contract...it should list what is covered post a copy and will let you know if you got them by the balls or got bent over.

you can find stock upper control arms around here for free or close to it. folks here take out that mid level stuff and put better hardware in place to support their lifts, usually. but a better plan is to buy one of those higher end sets, typically 450-650$, get the advantages and go forward.

DO NOT PAY THE DEALER 2500 FOR UCAs! YIKES!

But seriously OP, DO NOT pay them 2500 dollars for UCA's. You can get an extremely nice high end for a few hundred and even installed.

Also it might just be components replaced on said uca for even less. Get another opinion sounds like they are trying to go full Larry on you (see the conversations with The Dude)

To all the responders...the dealership is not saying $2500 to replace UCA's. They have told OP he needs to replace the entire lift. What exactly that means is beyond me but it reeks of bull shit.

OP are you having issues with the truck or did they just come out of left field saying control arms are bad?

I didn't know they could certify a truck with a lift . Certified only covers the drive line . IDK what that second warranty is but get it out and read it carefully and report back .

Bad squeaking noise in the front left. Had a friend look at it said the front left control arm was about to give. Said other on the way also. Toyota said the kit on it was around a 4800 kit, high end air kit. Said to replace just the front with existing parts would be half that. Said cheapest route was taking out all existing and putting in a 3 inch lift from them and replacing both arms, shocks, etc. I was wandering how it could have been a certified vehicle also with an aftermarket lift but I have never bought a certified before.
