I realized the other weekend while I was out in So-Cal that rifle season opens a little bit under 2 months from now, I swore to myself that I would make time for hunting this season so I called a buddy and asked if he wanted to hunt this year, he said he did so it’ll be him, me, and possibly my dad or sister hunting the 87 acres this year.

It’s been so long since we’ve hunted (at least 3 years) that I don’t know where any of our cameras or stands went so we’re a bit limited on what we can do (I have no budget to buy stands or camera) so I’m going to build a shoot house and it will go on top of a conex that’s on the property.
This is the view from on top of the conex as of now.
    8799D7ED-28D4-415C-98D4-74D2830A4DDE.jpg
and this is slightly off to the right (west) side.

Tomorrow I’m going to bush hog some lanes in and get the planting areas cut down for disking.
I think we’re going to do a small spot of rye grass and possibly another of grain blend.
We’ll also DIY some corn hoppers as additional temptation.

I also want to try something this year, I work 4-10’s so Thursday night after work I can get up to the property around 6 PM, disk a small spot between the 2 plots and see if the deer are drawn in by the fresh dirt, my grandpa and a bunch of other old hunters have always told me over the years that deer (does particularly) can’t resist freshly turned dirt.

Cole and I went this morning for youth day, didn’t see any deer but we had fun and saw some turkeys, squirrels, and some birds getting worms out of where the food plot should be :D

    We’ll try again this afternoon.

I ask him last night what he wanted to shoot today, he said “I’ll be happy with anything”. It made me happy that he said that.

I woke him up this morning at 5:30, he sat straight up and threw his hands in the air and said “yes!”.

I’m glad he’s excited, I explained to him this morning it’s not killing it’s hunting.

I’ve done everything I can to get the deer there, we just don’t have any acorns to hunt and they are on them right now.

Hopefully something with horns wants some yellow acorns this evening

Hopefully it works! I’ve heard good things about it from a former coworker, I would like to try it this year.

Out at the property bush hogging and I think I found an ideal spot for one of the plots, about 150 yards out from the stand but it’s semi-occluded, naturally shaped, and medium/heavy underbrush surrounding it with natural breaks in the plot and several old bush hog trails in from different directions.

    Looking at the stand.

And looking 90* left from that last photo.

I also just remembered that this is the same area that I found a 4 point buck skull about March of this year, hopefully it’s a good sign of activity.
