A few weeks back as I was backing my truck out of my driveway to move it to the other side, I noticed my truck was idling real rough. I put it in drive and it sputtered and the Trac off and check engine light came on. The truck was shaking and idling rough. I pulled back into my driveway and shut it off. I started it again and it started fine and was idling normal, but the check engine and Trac off light were still on. I took it up the black and drove it fairly fast to see if anything would happen, all appeared fine. So I unhooked the battery and rest the light.

Last week I drove 70 miles to my hometown to see my family, I stopped off at a hotdog place in town. When I got back into my truck, it started and I took off from the curb. When I got several hundred yards up road, my truck started to idle really rough, wouldn’t go over 23 mph and the check engine and Trac off light came on again. I limped it to my moms house approx 4 miles along the back streets and one steep hill where the truck wouldn't go over 18 mph. I pulled into my moms driveway, shut the truck off and went inside. About 20 minutes later I went back out to my truck and it started fine. I again drove it fairly hard on surface streets and up some hills and it ran fine. I drove home the 70 miles without issue.

A couple nights ago, I pulled it into the gas station to fuel up, after I got gas I started my truck and felt it idle rough. I began to drive and was merging onto I5 north, and no matter how hard I pushed the gas, the truck wouldn’t accelerate over 20 mphish. Finally it kicked in and as I was entering the Hwy it began to accelerate. I called Toyota the next day and scheduled an appointment for today.

I drive the 40 miles to the dealership, and was met by the service employee in the lot. I explained what was happening and he said let me go see, but it sounds like the fuel pump (there’s been a recall on it since January). He comes back after running my VIN. He said, sorry man it’s the fuel pump and there’s nothing we can do for you. He said Toyota is aware of the problem, but they don’t have a solution so I’m essentially shit out of luck. They offered me a rental vehicle, a Camry or Corolla. I’m leaving for a trip to Idaho and Montana, I will need a truck and 4WD. I pulled a Karen and talked to the service manager and she said there was nothing she could do even though I explained to her how dangerous it is for me to drive a vehicle that is losing power, she wouldn’t accept my truck for service. She gave me a the number for Toyota corporate, and told me to call them.

I’m currently waiting for Toyota Corporate Service to call me back. Anyone ever have any experience with something similar and what was the outcome. Thanks in advance.

There are a few people on here with that same issue. The service manager is more or less right, they cant do anything about it till toyota fixes the issue. As for the rental, your limited to what they have for rentals, some dealers sublet rentals to other rental agencies, others do their own in house rentals. So your at the mercy of what ever rental car they have.

In all the situation sucks for anyone involved in it.

Take it to a private shop. They can probably replace the fuel pump in a few hours. By the way, has the fuel filter been changed? Any chance of water in the tank?

All the dealer will do is put it on the analyzer and then change the parts the code says are bad. They don't even begin to know how to do real troubleshooting.

So did they confirm its the fuel pump issue, or did they pretty much assume its the fuel pump?

Might be something else wrong with the truck other than the fuel pump recall.

They wouldn’t even take possession of the vehicle. So, they assumed dashed on past experiences I’m guessing.

I'd ask them if they can replace it with another new recalled fuel pump (not the fixed version). I know they were doing that for some people a while back. That would get you back on the road.

Because they cant put a recalled part into a truck for safety reasons and warranty wont pay for a aftermarket one either.

Tough situation for both sides for sure. I’m sure they could order a fuel pump but the wait time for one to be received probably be longer than the one that is going to be replaced under the recall which should be right around the corner.....I’m surprised they didn’t take it in and make some phone calls to figure out how to get this customer a fuel pump. I see Tacoma’s on lots that customers don’t feel comfortable driving since the recall had come out. Iv also heard of 1 or 2 Tacoma’s get fuel pumps but wether or not they were the new design or not is the question....

Most other Toyota vehicles that are under the same recall have parts for replacement

They put the replacement one in mine.

My pump started to die and I got it to the dealer before it really took a $&it. They wanted to park it in the back and give me a Camry...this was in May mind you. I told them “go to hell, give me a truck..I bought the truck for a purpose and this isn’t my problem” They had none so they looked up an F150 (only thing available) rental for that long and probably had a heart attack. They got approval to replace the pump with the old design part that they had on hand and said when the recall is available I need to bring it in to get the new one. Truck has been running fine since but it might or might not fail again.

Better story would have been they put in a new old style pump and you drove it to a Ford dealer and traded it in for a new f150

Taco fits in the garage, by inches, but it does. That was a big plus for me, Florida is hell on paint and interiors being outside all the time.

It would be helpful if you edited the title of this thread and made it apparent you have a fuel pump issue.
