Safe way to haul your dog in the bed of truck.

Looking for recommended crates or possibly a tie down system for my new pup. She will ride in the truck, in a crate between my kids 6 and 7 sitting in boosters until she is too big. We also have a Subaru Outback which she will ride in the back of for most trips. The trips in the truck when she is bigger is where I’m looking for suggestions. I grew up with dogs just riding in the back, sometimes with a camper shell and some without. I also grew up when you could ride in the back of the truck too. Looking for good, safe recommendations. I tried this in the 3rd gen section and it was a shit show instantly saying I’m an idiot for not having the dog inside the truck. Hopefully we have more civil folks here in this section who can shed light on how they do it.

 

Please don’t use a tie down, leash or anything like that. A crash, hard turn, fender bender or unforeseen bump in the Road can end your dogs life.

Below is a list of crates I recommend for safe transportation of your dog. I listed them in order of what I recommend. The gunner is the safest on the market. With proper tie downs it will survive any crash you will survive. However myself, I got a 4runner to fit my dog crates in.

4. Trade the truck in for a 4runner or similiar sized SUV with ruffland crates inside.

 

All the dogs survived.

 

Crates are a great way to secure the dog. Even inside the car, being hit from behind will turn the dog into a projectile.

Have you considered putting the kids in the back

 

If you put your dog in a crate in the bed, please also remember wind noise and temperature. it gets loud and cold at speed.

 

Ive considered a lot stuff for the kids. Tried to return to Costco a few times too.

I also need to lookup a partition for the back of the Outback to keep her from flying forward in an accident.

I added OEM rail to bed front. OEM tie down and chew proof leash designed for this.
Attach it to dogs chest harness. Gives him enough room to get nose over side or in back window. 100 pound dog.
Dont take on freeway. Use when coming back from river and he is wet muddy.
He freaking loves it. Whines when i leave without him in truck. I have to drive him around block to get him happy again. Lol

 

Picking her up next weekend and I’m leaning towards the LuckyDuck kennel. It scored a top rating in the crash test like Gunner. My concern is it might be too small once she is full grown.

you’ll need a Large or XL. I recommend going with a cheap crate until fully grown. You can keep a smaller crate in the backseats for now and buy when it’s fully grown.

 

I went through two different sized kennels.
Maybe get just a regular kennel to start?
Might last you 8-10 months.

Kennels should be sized so the dog can turn around but not too much larger.
