Hello everyone, its my first post so if it's in the wrong place let me know. When looking for a cheap alternative for a front recovery point there wasn't much information.

I decided to post some pictures of BPF's recovery point in comparison to the TRD OR recovery hook, how it looks installed and the bolts I used for anyone looking into it.

Originally it came black, unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of it, but I painted it red.

If anyone has questions or wants specific picture just let me know! IMG_20200926_151735__01__01.jpg IMG_20200926_151740__01__01.jpg IMG_20200926_151747.jpg IMG_20200926_151057.jpg IMG_20200926_151055.jpg IMG_20200926_151044.jpg IMG_20200926_151019.jpg IMG_20200926_151017.jpg

You only put it on one side? Might complicate extraction with the off center pull.

I might be wrong but when I looked on the other side there was only one not so I wouldn't be able to attach another one even if I wanted.

Yeah, passenger side only for mounting the driver side lacks any preexisting holes. As far as strength is concerned the plate you bought is plenty strong, it is the part of the frame it is bolted to that might be an issue. 3 bolts are certainly better than the 2 on the factory hook but they all bolt to that lower sub frame which looks really weak if you were ever properly stuck. I would worry about that entire piece tearing loose. I spent a lot of time looking around at first for a replacement to the tow hook as well I ended up going with the ARB recovery point. It is expensive for sure and weights a lot, but in addition to the 3 mounting bolts on the sub frame there are 2 more that mount directly into the passenger side main leg of the frame (not sure what it is officially called but it is the proper frame that runs the length of the vehicle). If you were really stuck and needed a serious snatch I would trust the ARB to hold. I've heard of many folks who said they have recovered off the factory hook, which seems super sketchy - not sure how stuck they really were. But the extra strength from the plate you bought and the extra bolt is certainly better than the hook! Just keep that sub-frame in mind when you need to use it.

Thanks for the info! I thought the same thing about the OR hook and thought this would be better. I never get too wild so it was more of a better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it kinda thing.

    Looks awesome!
Did it come with all the bolts you needed? I assume it didn't :(
If you didn't know, by the way, BPF came out with their driver's side recovery point if you weren't aware

    Thanks!
It did not come with any hardware. I think I've seen some people re-use their old hardware but you'd still be short 1 bolt. I just bought three new higher grade bolts.
I had no idea they came out with the other side!

Just bought this myself and installed it today. The two bolts holding the factory tie down point both go to nuts welded into the sub frame crossbar. The third bolt used goes through the end of the crossbar and secures a 6” boxed frame piece. Anybody know what the purpose of those box ends are? There is one on the driver side as well.

As mentioned by others, while the recovery point itself is beefy as all get out, there will be some interesting leverage forces applied in a recovery situation due to the mounting geometry of that crossbar to the main frame.

I think I've seen people say they're just to keep dirt out. They even make shorter ones!

People may have said that, but it makes zero sense. A plastic push in plug would be cheaper for Toyota in several ways.

Do you know the exact bolts that you used for this? & are they all the same bolts?

M12-1.25-40 grade 8 or better, I reused the two bolts holding the factory tie down but the third bolt for the box end is too short, I found a grade 8 at the local hardware store to replace that, but I might order up 3 grade 10s just so they all match

Not trying to revive a dead thread, but I just went through the same search for an answer. The bolts are the same; here's a link to purchase https://tinyurl.com/h6dep5s6
